Definitely sounds like your power cord. Perhaps it was fried by the surges/failures you mentioned.

I remembered that I had an old laptop shoved in the back of the closet. Slower than a gerbil on a wheel, but hey -- better than nothing.

And I just ordered a new power cord off of eBay.
