Well, it's official: I am the crazy balloon lady. I can't remember if I posted this story or not, but a month or so ago, I was waiting on this woman at The Co-op. She was with her little daughter, and her daughter had a balloon. Now, most people who know me know that I'm afraid of balloons. Terrified, if you must know. It wasn't always that way ( Read more... )

its not so odd to be afraid of balloons, I know a couple others that are afraid as well...

..one I had invited to an event I was having...I had an exotic dancer coming to it..she was doing some special performances....one of which she came out completely covered in balloons and let people pop them

...my friend was totally torn between oogling the dancer and needing to be away from the balloons... she would walk up to get a closer look at her and run to the other side of the club once anyone got anywhere near the balloons to "remove" them...I felt such horrible guilt about the whole situation as I had forgotten about this particular issue...needless to say..anytime I asked her to go anywhere with me for months after that she asked about whether or not their would be balloons present...*guilt*

I told the next woman that I waited on what had happened, because I was still moderately shaken up. She replied that her daughter was afraid of balloons too.

Once, I threw this lunch party when I was going toc ollege in Syracuse, and had blown up soe mini ballons and static-cling-hung them to the wall for decoration. Then this woman comes, an acquaintance of mine who was a grad student and a member of the club I was throwing the party for. She says, "Oh, NO. I am seriously scared to death of balloons. traumatic childhood. You're going to have to put them away or I'll have to go home." And I took them all off the walls and put them in my bedroom, while she waited ont he porch, so people could come over and have lunch.

Someone threw a birthday party for me a few years back where he, too, hung up balloons. I didn't need him to get rid of them, but I did need to keep a safe distance, and, if at all possible, not look directly at them.

The balloon fear is one I have never heard of before, but I used to be deathly afraid and sketched out by clowns. I have no idea when or how it started, but it was compounded by being forced to read Steven King's "IT" at some point. Anyway, then when I was in BC, I lived for a while right next door to a husband and wife clown team, believe it or not. I actually got to know them as people, and they were so kind and generous with me that eventually I got over my fear enough to see them perform. Surprisingly, although I was very nervous and uncomfortable, I did enjoy it and found them both to be very funny. I haven't been around any other clowns so I don't know if that will rub off overall, but it felt good to know that I could get over it even a little. I have no idea how this relates to the balloon thing other than that clowns often are armed with them and put them to evil use.

This is veganlove from okcupid by the way...
