Speaking of fic...

For you all, I have a question, what makes you stop reading a fic: tense errors, spelling errors, out-of-character, Mary Sue...?

Just curious... *grin*

In my case its OOC, I can overlook plotholes and grammar but when characters are written out of my idea of them, I just stop. What is yours?

Generally for me, it's more the amount than the error itself actually. I can get past most things, especially spelling (which can be easily attributed to typos) unless it starts to reach levels that interfere with comprehension. If there are so many that I cannot get "into" the story, you've lost me. Tense errors tend to be my biggest one. I can only take a few of those here and there. If they are rampant through the fic, I stop.

Oh I never thought of layout, but yeah, you're right. Some of the layouts out there could kill a person. I would put format in there too: if the text is way too small, or an odd color, or the spacing is too cramped or something.

It's combination of things. I can usually deal with a little OOC stuff only because so many times the story itself is actually quite compelling. If it gets too far OOC though I have a hard time staying interested. After all I'm reading fanfiction because I'm a fan of the character/couple/show, etc. from the story.

The biggest one for me is grammar and spelling. I understand an occasional overlooked mistake. It's not like we're robots. But my problems are

A. Mistakes in the tenses of the verbs. And

B. The "to, too, two", "their, there" and for some reason lately I've seen alot of fics with wrong "then" and "than" uses. And of course the ever popular "your" and "you're" problem.

I am also not a fan of too much internet lingo. BFF, HBIC, all those cute little acronyms are not that cute when used in a fanfic. IMO. LOL. ;)

Oh, I haven't seen the "then" and "than" thing so much, or the lingo, thank goodness, because that last one would drive me crazy. *wry grin*

And I'm right there with you on the tense thing.

boredom or anger. I'll happy read some sues, OOC, tense changes and bad grammar if I'm interested. I'm enjoying it, I'll keep reading. There are some issues I just can't handle and they're mostly about how I feel. Sometimes the Sue is more of the focus than I'd like and I get bored. I'm in it for the characters I know, and I can like a new character, but I have to really really like them to want to read about them more than the characters I already know.

Some potrayals of het relationships or women make me angry and I stop. Most of the time I just get bored and stop if it's not a fic for me.
