If you can make a stencil of the pattern you want, then you can sponge-paint the design onto the fabric. That way the paint will go on in a thinner layer, and you can even let it dry and then do another layer over it if it doesn't look dark/clear enough.

That's what I'm looking at doing, I'm just worried it's going to look fake and shitty if I use fabric paint.
