oh, sure. but i like hearing the reasons behind obsession and interest even if it's something i'm not personally into. it's about the "why" of it, not about converting my taste.
No, I get WHY you asked, but I doubt my ability to come up with a good explanation of why something appeals to me. Jane Austen - I enjoy her writing. Wine - I like the taste. Buffy is really fucking kickass. **Shrug**
Maybe it's that there's nothing on the list that I consider an obsession. Now, if you said SS/HG, I could probably come up with some reasons.
i read pride & prejudice and liked it, but i guess i don't have enough subtlety to really appreciate it? not a lot really happens except INSIDE THE MINDS OF THE CHARACTERS, and i know it is sad that i find it harder to pay attention to psychological studies but i guess it's true. :(
i like wine fine, i guess i should have clarified and said oenophiles, haha. my stomach does get upset by wine, which is weird! it never really gets upset by beer or hard liquor.
I like Jane Austen for the social anthropology. She's actually un-romantic in some ways: successful love in Jane Austen is predicated either on the knowledge that the person you're in love with is a good, upstanding person, or because they're in love with you and you find that flattering enough that you start to appreciate them.
OK, well I love Buffy and wine (especially the juicy red stuff and I wish I could drink more without getting headachey). I don't know what "the mountain goats" is but I do love actual goats, espesh the little african pigmy goats with floppy ears (ah!). You can do what you will with the rest of the stuff on your list. I have no opinion on anything else except Scrubs, which really annoys me. :)
red wine often makes me feel sick. i don't know why. maybe it's the sulfur in it or something. the mountain goats are a band that my friends are really into.
i have seen them live and they are pretty fun. i do like the mountain goats, but am not in love with them like every other person i know (seriously, it sometimes seems like every IRL friend i have is into them).
I'm pretty meh about them save for a few songs-- I think it is because the lyrics matter, and there's a lot of making-fun-of-horror-genre stuff that doesn't work for me since my reactions to horror are somewhere between meh and "I don't want to go there."
BECAUSE I AM A DISCREET HUMAN I DONT KNOW WHY DOES ANYONE LIKE ANYTHING
i could probably break all of these things down into analysis but then i'd have to turn at least....oh, i don't know, 5 or 6 of those on myself and i can't really handle self examination at this moment. i'm fragile. let me have my taste.
i like joss whedon because he writes really feminist-friendly media. i never watched firefly, but i grew up on buffy and started getting into dollhouse. i feel so alienated by so many of the female characters i see on tv and in movies and he really allows his women to be 3d. i think he's a great writer, too, but it's an acquired taste. i mean, i also loved the writing in juno and apparently everyone in my age group is supposed to HATE it

The Mountain Goats, though? GIMME.
I love the lyrics, the composition, the orchestration, the mood...all of it. And, to boot, they put on a hell of a show.
