After watching a BBC special report on starving African children, and a few tears later, I think in addition to stopping human rights abuses in Asia I want to buy an assload of food and fly it to villages in Niger regularly. Starving people in Africa don't make sense to me. Here we all are, sitting on our butts watching TV and eating gummy bears ( Read more... )

Social Darwinism. And for that matter, Anthropological Darwinism too. There must be a reason why our genetic ancestors got the Hell out of Africa. Could it be because 2/3 of it are a giant desert and the rest is dense jungle?

Theres a reason why people migrated to North America. It because its better. End of story.

But does that mean that we shouldn't try to make things right in the world? I had no control over who my parents are and where they decided to raise me. And so it is with the rest of the world. No one had a choice in that matter. Shouldn't we, as Christians, try to make the world a better place for everyone and not just for ourselves? I mean, we are so incredibly blessed to be where we are. Shouldn't we try to spread the blessing?

I said what I did from a purely scientific and secular point of view.

In answer to your question, yes, although we obviously differ on the means. I'm more for the militaristic liberation and political freedom which would enable an environment that would foster free thought, capitalism, social freedom and mobility, and eventually a stable economy, and therefore a better life/existance.

Ah yes, since that worked so well the first time.

Anyone else here wanna take up the white man's burden again?

In all seriousness, I miss you and your wonderful devotion to your beliefs, Aaron. We must hang out come December, yes?

Oh, I might be interested in the sponsoring thing too, Steph.

I tried talking everyone i knew into sponsoring a child with me last year! Maybe I forgot to hit up my Vacaville friends. There were these people outside the co-op talking about kids in India, and I went home and asked my roommates, you know, for two dollars a month from each of us, look what we can do. But they were all apathetic. But I still want to do it.
