What's this? An etymology puzzle that's been staring me in the face my whole life and I never considered it? I am ashamed at my blind spot on October. I have no idea why it is not the eighth month, but I have a feeling it used to be. "September = 7th; "October" = 8th; "November" = 9th; "December" = 10th. But the preceding eight months don't line up the same way.

Someone answer this please before I spend two hours on Wikipedia figuring it out.

October was the name of the 8th month in the old Roman calander. It retained it's name even after January and February were added.

No wikipedia required.
