Holy shit. That was both terrifying and heartbreaking. The last paragraph just killed me.

I am also a fan of that last paragraph, so I'm particularly tickled that you liked it, too! And thank you so much for reading; I'm glad this worked for you. <3

AAAAAAAAHHHHHH! I love this, in a very masochistic kind of way, because it's so painful but also so wonderful.

Sam regards him surprisingly darkly, considering the pep talk he's just given. "I learned from the best, Dean," he says.

"You tell me."

That just makes me want to wail incoherently.

OMG, this is so, so amazing! I'll be back later when I have something more coherent to say. For now I just wanted to let you know that this is so very Sam&Dean and so utterly intense... and frightening... and perfect. You're a genius.

I'm really happy that so many people are finding this intense/frightening; that's exactly what I was hoping for, but I wasn't sure if it'd actually be able to evoke that. Same for the Sam&Dean of it, because Dean's so much all over the place here, and also because consequently it's hard to be able to get Sam to come through via Dean's narration. So your comment makes me happy. Thank you so much for reading! <3

Holy wow!! :O This is PERFECT. Couldn't have imagined it better.

I just love that it's so dark and also so funny. Creme brulee cracked me up bigtime. And all the details, oh how I love the details.

SO MANY THINGS!! I don't even know where to start, just... gah! I don't want to dissect it either I just like it like a fine multi-layered specimen of awesomeness.

One thing that occurs to me as I'm reading though, is how REAL it feels. Like, they do the hunting thing because they save people etc etc... but that just isn't complete, not personal. But Dean wanting to finish the hunt so much, because Sam laughed, that seems real. It's how it used to be and they;re trying to scramble out of the hole they've dug themselves from a lifetime of desperate scrambling, and they're just growing more dysfunctional.

Ahhh brilliant :D

I am so glad this fill worked for you! Because while I was writing it was just like, oh dear, are we going for this? Yup, yup I guess we are... Same with the whole cooking fiasco portion. XP I'm glad you liked the creme brulee--AS I AM SURE SAM DID NOT. XDD

And I'm thrilled that this felt real to you, and you describe that sense and how it comes back to who Sam and Dean are as people, not just hunters, is described so beautifully in your comment.

Thank you so much for your lovely commentary, and for your prompt!

He's afraid that if he comes apart, if he gives up that distance, then either Sam's going to break or he will.

Ouch. Yes, this is where Dean's head went to in that season.

This whole story hurt to read because I could feel Dean coming apart.

But those last couple lines were heartbreaking.

After writing this fic, I actually went back to the first scene of 7x09 because I wasn't sure if I was getting the season ambience/characterization adequately, and holy wow. XP I'd forgotten the sheer black intensity of S7 Dean. Dare I say that even S9 Dean ain't got nothing on him?? O_o;;

Thank you so much for reading; I'm glad that this worked for you. <33
