Sam regards him surprisingly darkly, considering the pep talk he's just given. "I learned from the best, Dean," he says.
"You tell me."
That just makes me want to wail incoherently.

I just love that it's so dark and also so funny. Creme brulee cracked me up bigtime. And all the details, oh how I love the details.
SO MANY THINGS!! I don't even know where to start, just... gah! I don't want to dissect it either I just like it like a fine multi-layered specimen of awesomeness.
One thing that occurs to me as I'm reading though, is how REAL it feels. Like, they do the hunting thing because they save people etc etc... but that just isn't complete, not personal. But Dean wanting to finish the hunt so much, because Sam laughed, that seems real. It's how it used to be and they;re trying to scramble out of the hole they've dug themselves from a lifetime of desperate scrambling, and they're just growing more dysfunctional.
Ahhh brilliant :D

And I'm thrilled that this felt real to you, and you describe that sense and how it comes back to who Sam and Dean are as people, not just hunters, is described so beautifully in your comment.
Thank you so much for your lovely commentary, and for your prompt!

Ouch. Yes, this is where Dean's head went to in that season.
This whole story hurt to read because I could feel Dean coming apart.
But those last couple lines were heartbreaking.
