School in Hampshire lets out at 3:15, and it's 3:18 when Sam is offered a lift by Abigail's mom. Dean's school let out at three, and he'd always been outside Sam's classroom door to walk him home when Sam came out before.
But the carpark's nearly empty, and Sam doesn't really want to go back into the school because someone might ask him what he's doing, and also if Dean were to eventually turn up, because Sam hadn't made his own way home, he wouldn't be able to find him. Also, Sam's cold.
He gives one last glance to the school gates, sees no Dean, and says, "Yes, that would be very nice of you, thank you."

When Sam isn't there Dean panics. But at that point, it's just Dean's regular panic, the same jolt he feels whenever Sam doesn't immediately pick up the phone, or reaches over the lit gas stove wearing one of Dad's shirts and is about to kill himself by burning himself alive if Dean doesn't bark his name

He arrived back at the flat complex, and had to walk up the stairs, gripping the handrail, and hating every tiny action he'd taken in the last hour and a half, hated staying to hear Mr Wallace's view on his English essay, and then stopping to joke with Janey by her locker, hates that he knew enough about Marvel comics to keep the conversation going for five minutes before he finally left the middle school to get Sam. And then his ridiculous response to the crisis, which led to this, his arrival back at the flat at quarter to five to finally begin the actual search for Sammy

Sam had been kind of pissed off that Dean both hadn't turned up and then hadn't come home, so clearly Sam was right to have taken the lift, because he'd have had to walk home in the rain alone otherwise.
And then Dean had come home and kind of enveloped Sam with his freezing cold soaking body and Sam hates him even more because gross, that isn't funny Dean.
And Dean lets out what kind of sounds like a sob, but probably isn't, right? But Sam sort of hugs him back after that.
"And what on Earth have you been doing that would get you looking that messed up, Dean?" Dad is growling, having slammed the front door shut

Okay, this is all kinds of amazing. Dean's panic, and then his relief, comes through so clearly as does Sam's... annoy(ed)/(ing), but basically good kid-ness and John's... well, John. :)

Abigail's mom smiles and indicates the back door.
