Powers!Dean fic. Sam's powers didn't come from Azazel's blood, they were something he was born with: a natural consequence from being an angelic vessel. The thing is, Sam isn't the only angelic vessel in the family. Something happens to awaken Dean's own gifts and he does not react well. Empathic!Dean, please, with emphasis on Dean having been latent before. :)
I love this idea so much. I'm working on a story with a similar bent, but it's one of those concepts that people can do in so many fascinating ways and I always enjoy seeing where people take it. :D
Empath!Dean is my all time favorite since I think it works really well with his characterization. My second favorite is healer!Dean because come on, Sam and Dean heal WAY too quickly, but that wouldn't lead to as many interesting freak outs. :D What other power were you thinking of?
Well, if I were to write vessel!powers for Dean, I'd want to pick something that's a direct counterpoint to Sam's powers. Of which we've seen precognition, telekinesis and demon control. Specifically, I was thinking post-cognition (i.e., the ability to see past events. Either in dreams/visions or actual hallucinations that take place over the real world).
Plus, empathy is quite close to the power Dean has in one of my WIPs.
Not, you know, that I'm thinking of filling this at all. At least not before Thursday. <3
Oooh, color me intrigued! Maybe another direct tie to Sam's powers could be Dean having control over angels? Dean did kill Zachariah when only an angel was said to be able to kill another angel, after all... Post-cognition would be fascinating! One of my favorite book series involves a remembrancer, someone who can look back through time.
Also, what WIP is it that you speak of? Is it one that you're already posting or might plan to post soon? Because if so, I'm definitely interested in reading it! :)
I'd thought of that, but I'm not sure how I'd incorporate angel control into the plot. Oooo, what book series is this? The only time I remember seeing post cognition is in the manga series Hands Off, where one of the main characters sees (tragic) past events transposed over present events. Like, for example, seeing a dead body lying in the middle of the street where somebody had been killed in the past.
It's an X-Men crossover that I have not posted yet. Both Dean and Sam have powers. I'm quite fond of it. Glad you're interested.
It's the Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix. I love it; it's YA, but a more adult style of YA than most I come across and the world building. Oh, I love the world building so much. The series is more about averting traditional necromancy tropes (the trilogy is mainly based around a family whose claim to fame is that they're the good necromancers who stop the dead that the bad ones raise), but one of the characters in the second book turns out to have Remembrancy powers and it's very interestingly portrayed.
I'll definitely keep an eye out for that! I love X-Men crossovers. :)
I know that trilogy! I think I've only read the first book because I don't remember the Remembrancer, but I do remember the bells <3 (Sound-based powers are my favourite kind ever).
I highly recommend the second and third books! I enjoyed the first one well enough, but the second one is where it got good for me. And yes, I love the bells!
Healer!Dean is one of my absolute favorite tropes too! It's just, for the purpose of the meme and all, Dean being in need of healing rather than healing others seemed to be the right way to take it. One of my WIPs has hints of latent healer!Dean though, because it's a trope I love too much to stay away from.
Actually, of all the SPN characters Dean's the most likely to turn a healing power into a reason for h/c. Just because healing often takes a toll on the healer if they don't watch themselves. And could see Dean not watching himself. :3
Also, I am intrigued by this WIP. Have you posted it?
You raise a very, very good point. :D My favorite healer!Dean story is Stigmata, for that reason. Dean would absolutely not watch himself, not if it meant someone else was suffering when he could take it in their place.
Not that one, no! It's about halfway done and I wanted to finish it before it's posted anywhere. But it's all about some latent powers!Dean, specifically with empathy and healing. Because there's never enough of those, right? :)
