Dean's a mutant. In fact, that's the real reason John left him - he couldn't stand being around his freak son. When he goes to collect Sam from Stanford, he's terrified of his little brother finding out. So he goes out of his way to hide his {insert power here} from Sam, because he can't stand to be abandoned again.
Somehow Sam finds out anyway, though, and instead of being all disgusted, Dean is shocked when he totally turns into a full-on mutant rights activist. Because Dean is his big brother, dammit, and no genetic mutation is going to change Sam's mind about how awesome he is.
