Draco thought that his mother had been right about at least one thing: never bother a house elf before a dinner party. He was quite glad that his mother had never met Womble, as she'd likely have come up with a way to transfer him to her household. He smiled at the thought of that conversation as he went to open a bottle of wine. The Cotes de Castillon, I think. That's definitely a scent of lamb coming from the kitchen.

Theodore arrived and forced himself to loosen his grip on his walking stick. He didn't enjoy Apparating, even though it was something he was proficient at. The stick itself was little more than a prop, an affectation, a crutch (though not in a physical sense). It had little in the way of magical properties, but had belonged to the grandfather he had never met, and he felt more of a connection to that part of the family than he did his parents.

He closed his eyes for a moment, swallowed, and walked up to the door to ring the bell.

The door popped open almost immediately, a house elf bowing somewhere in the vicinity of Theodore's knees. "Master Draco Malfoy is expecting Mister Theodore Nott!" He stepped aside to let Theo enter, and then led him down the short hall and through an archway into a sitting room that spanned nearly the length of the flat, with high windows overlooking trees and a glimpse of water below.

Draco had turned away from the window when the bell rang, and smiled at his visitor. "Thank you, Womble. I'll ring when we're ready to dine." As the elf hurried away, Draco poured another glass of wine and offered it.

"Welcome to the humble abode," he said. "Can you believe, Muggles put great store in the privilege of living in a former factory?"

"You seem to have made a ready home of it," Theodore said with just a hint of a smile, taking the proffered glass in his free hand. Draco was looking well. Hale and healthy and all that. Almost instinctively, Theodore was composing new text in his mind: The smile that had been a sneer on young Sebastian had been entirely transformed as he'd grown into adulthood. There was a warmth there that had been absent before. The way it touched his eyes was new to Alexander... Theodore cleared his throat. "But," he added, forcing himself back into the conversation at present, "you perhaps understand muggles better than I." He sipped at the wine, and was very pleased.

"Oh?" Draco turned to Theodore, watching him, his eyebrows half-raised. "Does your publisher know?"

He left the window and opened another bottle of wine, returning to fill their glasses. When the bottle was safely on the table, he leaned back against the window frame.

"What would it be like?"

"My editor knows," Theodore says distractedly, thinking about how to describe such a world to Draco. He looked out of the window, then focused his eyes on his reflection in the glass.

"Dark. As if the sun were afraid to shine. Muggles are hunted for sport. Decent wizards huddle together in hidden places, trying to find a time and place to strike, but their hope wanes with each passing day. Those who do not bear the Dark Mark are hauled off the streets and given to the Dementors." Theodore let out a breath. "The future..." He closed his eyes, and leaned his forehead against the cool glass of the window. "Is uncertain. I don't know how it ends."
