☄12. Encounters by the pond. [Open RL in the Fire Nation.]

So what if it was his birthday? Turning eighteen meant you were an adult in some places, but Zuko had been an adult for years, in function if not in reality. It didn't mean anything to him. He was sure his mother and his uncle remembered the occasion, and that warm glow of assurance - that he knew they would without having to ask, or check - was ( Read more... )

The first thing Azula noticed was how calm things were. There were no riots, no mobs, no protests-- at least not within the palace walls. All the people who lived and worked here who had supported her... had they all been thrown in prison? Or had they simply taken the coward's way out and bowed down to a traitor's rule?

Both options made her blood boil. How dare they try to make it look as if nothing had happened? How dare they act like everything was peaceful and happy now?! Zuko was ruining her country, her legacy, and her life, and he had no right to act like everything was fine now.

Fire at the ready, Azula swooped into the courtyard, her eyes wild and angry. "You think you can just fly in here and take my throne from me?" she called loudly, her words aimed at Zuko (though others around might hear her, too). "Well, guess what? I can do the same thing!"

Azula knew she had to die. There was no point in living if she had lost. It was always more honorable to die than to fail; that's what she had been taught her entire life. And yet, she also knew that she couldn't die, because she had made a promise.

Everything was turned on its head. She wholeheartedly believed things that were in dichotomy with each other-- how in the world was she supposed to know which was right? It was maddening.

She let out another blood-curdling scream, throwing her head back and just letting her fire go everywhere.

just let me know if I misread that. lol honorregained June 10 2010, 20:23:18 UTC
Zuko breathed hard, standing over her and out of the way of her fire.

"Are you going to leave on your own, or does someone need to come get you?" His voice was pitched low. If forced to, he would lock her away. She needed help, and he trusted Dr. Cuddy to give it - but that trust was nothing in the face of his responsibility to his people.

Azula just knelt there on the ground, panting. She didn't move, or speak.

Slowly, tentatively, he knelt beside her, tensed and ready to be attacked again.

"Come to your rooms, and I'll find someone to take you to Dr. Cuddy's," he said, still quiet. It was painful to even say it. Zuko was conscious of everyone gathered, watching them: he knew how cripplingly ashamed he had been after his father defeated him in public. He wanted to spare his sister whatever he morally could.

Azula didn't move to attack again, but she didn't offer him her hand either. In fact, she gave no indication that she had heard him either way.

He felt the wild impulse to pick her up and carry her there himself, but Zuko had been hurt too many times by following through on those impulses. Instead, he stood again and turned to face the crowd of people, back to Azula.

"Get out of here," he called to them. When only a few of them moved, the ones left behind obviously reluctant to leave their injured Fire Lord - for taking that hit had taxed, and burned, him - Zuko said more sharply, "She's my sister. I said leave."

They left.

Azula didn't.

He watched her for a moment, expecting her to attack again, to take the opportunity - she didn't. It was wrong.

Zuko hesitantly went to his discarded robe, digging through it to find the book he used to access the community. Not daring to touch her, though the urge was there, he slowly sat cross-legged on the floor and opened the book to post.

She didn't look up, but she could see what he was doing out of the corner of her eye-- and she didn't like it.

"No," she said sharply.

"You're not staying here," was all he said, firm on it. He couldn't admit it, but he felt something loosen, relieved, that she wasn't completely gone.

Then Zuko spoke to the book: "I need someone to bring my sister home."

"No." She shook her head. "Don't tell her." She didn't want Dr. Cuddy to know she was here. She didn't know what was happening, she her mind was still a jumbled, confused mess, but she knew that she didn't want her to know that she had gone back, and had asked for death.

He considered it, but he knew already that he'd agree.

"Alright," he relented. "I won't tell them what happened. But you are leaving."

Azula didn't respond further. Her eyes glazed over again, and the blankness and lack of response took over again.

Zuko kept glancing over at her, not worried, as he spoke to the community.
