I think U and Ur and R and the likes perhaps enhance the speed of communication. They also alter your tone if you're going for that effect.

But I just wanted to say- I was at Publix the other day, and the sign did say "10 Items or Fewer"!! heh

(I hate when people use things like 'your' for 'you're' but he does make a point in that it doesn't significantly hinder what meaning they're trying to get across)
