Watched a couple of this variety last weekend. First up was Guardians of the Galaxy. I found it very enjoyable, overall.

We saw Pacific Rim for the first time in the theater (which was *so* worth it for that movie) and I was just a bit shocked when the first five-ish minutes was exposition consisting of what I thought was going to be the storyline of the whole movie. Nope. They basically did the minimum they needed to do to set up the premise and then went straight to what we all really wanted to see: giant robots fighting giant monsters! So much fun!!! Especially if you were raised on Japanese monster movies.

BTW, if you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend watching the Honest Movie Trailer for Pacific Rim.

Yeah, the whole thing was a loving homage to Japanese kaiju movies. And why waste time on things other than humongous mechas slugging it out with monsters? I mean, really.

Saw the Honest Trailer, and also the How It Should Have Ended. Both were definitely worth it.

Well, seeing as a bunch of space pirates thing he's a "jackass," I can't imagine he's too nice.

Groot is the best.

I agree that the villains in GotG were pretty one note, especially Ronan. Nebula had some hints of an interesting story, but didn't quite manage to do enough with it. Karen Gillan did look super badass with her shiny blue head, though.

I enjoyed your Alaskan geography rant. It's always fun to see people with a specific area of knowledge get all steamed up about the things Hollywood gets wrong, and in this case rather pointlessly wrong too.

I found I was okay with the underdeveloped Ronan (though more Thanos would have been better). After all the Loki angst, I found the silly fun of Guardians a nice change. What upset me was how they cut all the good scenes for CE in Dark World. *He* deserved so much more than to be a 2d villain.

I did enjoy Cap2 which surprised me because I was so bored by Cap1. Just when it got interesting it...stopped?

I must the only person who was bored by Pacific Rim. I love Toho Co movies so I thought I might like it, but not so much. And I kinda of like Power Rangers for all its cheesiness. I can't quite pin down what didn't work for me. I didn't really enjoy the characters and there was just so much plotty plotness to wade through before the payoff of GIANT MONSTER FIGHT! And I found the fight scenes were just underwhelming for all that. I dunno. Maybe it all just looked too pretty and polished? Maybe what I really want is tiny model cities, little toy vehicles, fire cracker explosions and a bathtub ocean. **shrug**

LOVED GotG, though yes, it stumbled and fell down a bit. Still haven't seen the latter film. I keep meaning to, but I keep getting sidetracked by other prettier films.
