The use of the monster no one but Vincent can see was, IMHO, a good metaphor. That's how depression is. Oh, now, I hadn't thought of that. I was starting to think that the monster was a weak, unneeded part of the episode, but casting it as a metaphor for depression almost justifies its existence.
Agreed completely. The scene where Amy is tripping up the steps, naively confident that they've 'cured' Van Gogh's depression, while the Doctor lags behind, knowing the truth, but not wanting to tell her. One of the best and most sensitive treatments of depression I've seen on screen.
Frankly, this just makes the Churchill episode even more disappointing.
