2nd Doctor and Zoe Complete for Gallifrey One 2010

Sep 16, 2011 23:32

So for Gallifrey my GF volunteered to be Zoe from the Mind Robber since she had a good time cosplaying Trek and Superheroes (and very briefly Ace) at SDCC and is a fan of the 60's stretch lame look sported by Yvonne Craig's Batgirl. I decided to follow suit and finally pull my own Two together to match.

More Pics and info

The Catsuit: It was tough finding the right fabric. it needed to be a grey/charcoal sparkly metallic stretch lame material. Most lames tend to be black or silver but nothing in between these days. I got a white and tried to dye it grey or a light black and it was... okay. The hot Rit dye tended to make the metallic fibers go copper in color (although cold dyeing fixed that), but in the end it still read too silver for my liking.

We found a good cheap fabric in the LA Fashion District that was better, but leaned too grey and the metallic weave only really read from certain angles (depending on the light). In others it looked like a drab grey fabric.

Comparisons of the 1st Version/1st fabric to the new/curent one:

Finally by luck, while doing research on my Captain Marvel, Britex in SF turned up an *ideal* grey-silver stretch lame from Italy, but was a bit pricey at $35.00 per yard and I knew the project would need 5 yards to be safe.

However, as a nice happenstance of B Black and Sons selling out out my 1st choice of (*expensive*) gabardine wool for my Five Coat, I ended up going with a much cheaper but nearly as good secondary wool option and thus I was able to afford this great fabric. The project was underway.

A BIG thanks has to go to Batfriend's wife who did the seamstress work on the Zoe outfit scanning through my collection of DVDS and images and basically adapting the pattern from the Julie Newmar Catwoman suit she'd made for herself. After ironing out kinks on two test suits - one from muslin and another form the 1st cheaper grey fabric - I'd say she did a superb job.

Wig and Boots: Finishing the outfit is a wig found and styled at Outfitter Wigs in Hollywood.

Also a pair of vintage ankle boots with the lowest heel we could find that my GF bought off etzy.com for $20.00 (a great site for used footwear for women I might add).

As for my Two, I had been meaning to put one together for myself for sometime now to fill in one of my Doctor costume gaps. After my GF's costume wa sunderway and seeing Gally had all but one of the surviving Troughton companions in attendance, I knew now was the time to make it happen. I'd already been eyeing up a lot of places for the past year to buy the items I needed, so once I set aside the money I spent all of January assembling the pieces. Big thanks to wulfae and VanDonovan for the marvelous Two Breakdown which I referenced quite a lot.

The Shoes: A used pair of vintage (though not 60's but close enough) Hush Puppies I won on ebay for $20.00. I'm wearing these with black and grey socks for the moment though I know Troughton has worn white socks as well. I'll go with my mood here.

The Trousers: I was aiming for the Season 6/Mind Robber Trousers and not the giant check trousers of Season 4. Well, I never found a houndstooth wool fabric that was quite right (scale or color was usually off) for a custom pair so I did the next best thing and found a pair of vintage 60s/70 pants with large Houndtooth at Iguana Clothing in Hollywood for $25. I took it to my tailor and had the bell bottom flairs taken out and then added some buttons (courtesy of Jo-Ann) along the waist for the suspenders. I have this reflecting the Invasion shots where the buttons are seen outside the pants but I'm thinking I'll change these to interior buttons before Gallifrey.

The Suspenders: I bought a nice red 1 1/2" wide pair of braces with the leather stirrups from www.suspenderfactory.com. They look great. They are only Y backed and not X backed like Troughton's but a small upgrade to do in the future. I also bought a yard of yellow felt from Jo-Ann on sale for $3.00. I've cut out the shapes of the flower, diamond, circle, clover and moon (with the help of some stencils I got from Micheals) and will be fabric glueing these on tonight.

EDIT- Shapes now glued on- reads rather well. Although I now have a lead on X backed suspenders budget and time dictate it'll just have to wait for a post-con upgrade...

As Wulfae pointed out in the Two breakdown the exact order/pattern of shapes the suspenders changed depending on the story so I sort of amalgamated what I could make out between the two best ref shots of them.

The Bow Tie: My search for a replacement Eleven bow tie led me here to http://www.beautiesltd.com/PRODUCT.ASPX?pn_deptid=285 - and this is what I got for my Two - the Blenheim. I almost went for the slimline (and Troughton has worn larger bow ties in some stories) but I loved the comical look of his far-too-small bow tie. So I got the children's size instead in the same patten. Giant safety pin courtesy of my keeping one from a previous hat order.

The Shirt: I bought two shirts from It's a Wrap for $15 each. I used one shirt (with no breast pocket) as the main shirt and the other as the donor. The donor shirt was used to replace the buttons (white instead of clear) and also to create a matching collar. I drew one up with the help of my tailer and he cut off the sleeves at elbow length and created/added the nice low/wide/floppy Two collar for me in about a week. I'm happy. It reads well.

The Pocket Red Paisley Bandana: Bought at Iguana Clothing for $3.00.

Substitute hanky with more color (something a lot of people brought up to me, so I'm trying Steve's Seven Hanky here and it's a pretty good read. Either should be fine. I'll probably go with my mood here.

The Frock Coat: After a rather fruitless search trying to find a cutaway/morning frock that would fit me baggy in a 44 or 46L that I could modify by added buttons and side pockets (there was little to choose from in this size in ebay and what little there was was expensive.) So I finally bit the bullet and comisisoned this from Baron Boutique and I think they did a good job. They got the fit, shape, buttons, and pockets.

The only niggle is it has two middle rear tails instead of one (which I think is correct). But finding good references of the back of the coat was tough I must say. I may have them fix it if it's not too much extra but if not, it's certainly quite good as-is.

Sonic Screwdriver: You want a silver penlight for Two's sonic. I had bought two for Van Donovan to use at previous cons so I was ready to go here. There's an energizer and an Eddie Bauer brand for both that work well in the $6-$15 range you can buy at Target.

TARDIS Key: I doubt I'll take one out, if so it'll be my mailbox key again... but you want the trusty silver yale key for Two.

Watch: Troughton seems to be wearing a silver circular watch and later by Season Six a white or silver barrel shaped watch with black or brown leather band. For now I'll probably just recycle my Seven wristwatch til I find another one.

Wig: Bought and (slightly) styled by Outfitter Wigs again. My last major step is took look into some make-up options to try and add a little age to my face since while the wig helps I feel I look more like Paul McCartney than Patrick Troughton!

500 Year Diary: I had bought a small black leather sketchbook to make up one of these but I found a good Diary match in the meantime. So when that arrives next week, I'll add the lettering and have this to add to the props. EDIT: it has arrived and lettering added. The diary I found (the eccolo lock model in black) was the best I could find for size shape and giant lock. Lettering was tougher. I settled on a generic 3/4" size in white. Ideally it should be a thinner font in more of a tan or gold, but there wasn't much to be had in the art and craft stores I found. It will certainly do and should I find some better lettering or possibly find a way to emboss the diary they can easily be removed down the line.

Update:Thanks to bobamatt on the RPF I have now applied better tan colored lettering for the Diary:

Recorder: For now I plan to borrow one, but down the line I'll probably pick one up and start painting away....

Look for these on Saturday at Gallifrey. Vandonovan should be joining us as Jamie so we can be the full season 6 TARDIS crew.
