The Best of 2005: Music

Dec 20, 2005 21:27

Well, its that time of the year where record critics try to outdo themselves in fits of pomp by listening the exact same fucking albums in varying orders to come up with the best albums of the year. Never one to be outdone by other pretentious fucks, I figured I could throw my two cents into the ring and see what sticks to the wall. And hell, ( Read more... )

Haha. There with yah on Bright Eyes. Damn! Daddy yankee is the worst thing to ever happen to Carribean music. As all ppl know, I love Dancehall/Reggae above all else, but what the hell is this Reggaeton garbage?

Yeah, Dancehall is pretty damn cool.

Daddy Yankee is horrendous... although I don't know if they are quite as horrible as Shaggy was a couple of years ago...

I agree with you on Kanye West. He was on Time and their entire article was like "OMG??!?! A black person that speaks in complete sentencens?!?! And doesn't talk about crack abnd bitches?!?!?! OMG?!?!?!"

The mainstream media has been doing a campaign for twenty years to pay attention only to those aspects of hip-hop that are the most reductionist, and then they pick, at random, some MC with a good vocabulary, and decide that he is a new thing. As if there had never been a Public Enemy, never been a KRS-One, never been a Jungle Brothers, never been a De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Hieroglyphics, The Fugees (who, of course, also got mainstream press), Mos Def and Talib Kweli...

etc...

Yeh, etc etc

The J5, Blackilicious, Ultramagnetic MC's and the list goes on and on.

I think its just gotten to the point that rap has been around long enough that the media has to start paying attention.

I've noticed the same thing with graphic novels. The media has suddenly decided they are in fact high art, but instead of looking at some of the all time classics that are coming out now, they are picking some very average stuff to vindicate.

On the other hand, I'm happy that Chris Ware has a gig in the New York Times magazine now... that guy certainly paid his dues.

I saw him (Kayne West) in concert on monday with U2, not knowing anything about him. I would just like to begin by saying i hate rap. but, at least musically i think, cut his overpowering beat some and he would have been listenable. his lyrics (as far as i could tell. it was a concert after all.) were not terribly offensive. which is one of my main problems with rap. he may not be terribly good, but i dont think i would put him in the bottom 5. but i guess i have never heard his actual album. but heck, what to i know.

I was at that concert!! It was awesome!!
Anyhow, I love rap, especially gangsta-ass shit, but I've generally disliked Kany-eezy through out his carrer.
But check it: he has some good things to say, and he's positive. He's not that good though, but his performance was pretty damn good.

A new Secret Machines song "Alone Jealous and Stoned" from their forthcoming album Ten Silver Drops(released April 18) is good.
