"I have got to learn to stop leaving drive-by comments on prompts." No you don't. You have got to keep filling them!

God, when the puppy flickered, I felt it down to my bones. Poor Sam, poor puppy. Poor everyone.

Only Sam Winchester would hallucinate a puppy!

I think maybe the puppy was some kind of symbol or something. For Sam's inner self? I dunno. He really *wanted* that damn dog.

You have got to keep filling them!

I can't believe OP wanted me to! Who wants something like this from such a sweet, schmoopy prompt??

The prompt wasn't that sweet and schmoopy. If I recall, it was okay with Dean being reminded of Hell hounds. So dark and haunted can't be that unexpected for a fill.

I was still a little surprised. But the response was overwhelmingly positive, so it all worked out! (It's probably still a good thing I didn't go with the flesh rotting off and puppy teeth dropping out onto the floor--I'll save that for sharp_teeth. ;)

Man, I LOVE your Sam-mind, the way he slips in and out of reality and stubbornly refuses to name the mutt but keeps her, regardless. Good shtuff.

I could not think of a name to save my life. So Sam had to deal with the fallout of *that*.

I wasn't sure what I was doing here, but it's always easier to write characters who are a bit off than ones who aren't. Glad you enjoyed! There needs to be more crazy Sam. Oh yes.

Oh, absolutely. It's tough to get Sam's voice right and make him interesting, I think. Dean is such a charismatic character that Sam sometimes feels a little boring in comparison. Crazy gives him color.

It was completely inappropriate to laugh when the puppy flickered, wasn't it? It was more of a "HA! I knew this puppy business was going somewhere evil!" rather than, you know, cackling at Sam's pain. If that helps make me a better person. XD

And on that note:

Sam stands in the doorway and listens to the dry noise, like feathers and the rustling of skirts. Fragile breezes, breaths from ruined bodies. He bites his lip and looks at the screen. Lucifer winks from behind the glass, and then it’s shapeless bodies, shadows and static and he’s not sure if the bodies are real, or the static is.

Gah, how I wish Show would give us more of Sam like this on a regular basis. Even if he just acted like there's invisible chaos going on all the time, I would be so so happy. But maybe that's greedy, I dunno. I'm just babbling.

Anyway. Loved the descriptions, and the twist, as usual. <3

I was halfway through the prompt on this and went, "Oh, the puppy's a hallucination." Then I got to the end of the prompt and no, the puppy's just a puppy. But come *on*, it's so *obvious*, right?

We all enjoy Sam's pain. We must. Or we wouldn't keep coming back to the show. ;)

And I really don't get how Sam can be totally lucid and fine most of the time--it's like the hallucinations have no connection to anything else going on in his head, which makes no sense to me at all. So your wanting this stuff isn't greedy, imho. Just logical.

Glad you enjoyed!

You broke my heart!

Sam's imaginary friend is all the embodiment of his abandoned hopes and dreams? And with the creepifying intro, all the feathers and flickers and bodies and whispers, and Sam isn't even sure if Dean's actually watching Spanish TV, before switching gears to aw, PUPPY!!!, we're right with Sam in his craziness: first we brace for claws and fangs flying at us from behind, then, BAM! the love we feel for this pitiful, grateful creature is ripped away leaving us stunned and raw and ready to curl up against the nearest wall and weep at the pointless cruelty of the world.

And then Dean knows about Sam's puppy, and tells him to take care of it. Sam wasn't all alone in the crazy after all. He's a light for Sam when all other lights have gone out.

I love this!

Oh, wait -- does Dean actually see the dog and he's not just ordering Sam to indulge the one happy fantasy he has?

AAAH! This is the worst of all possible worlds! Sam's litmus test for reality is barely better than flipping a coin, and now Dean thinks Sam's some kind of animal abuser! You broke my heart all over again!

Ha! I was waiting for someone to pick up on that!

Actually, it may be that the dog isn't real, or it might be that it is, and the flicker was the hallucination. ;)

I'm sure Dean understands Sam's situation, so his tenseness would be due to the whole hellounds, cynophobia thing. But yeah, it's a very real possibility that the dog is actually there. So you win points! Because thus far you're the only person who's caught that.

But either way, Dean is looking out for Sam. Because he's Deeeeannn.

I had exactly zero plans to write for this meme--why does this keep happening??

Heh. But seriously, I'm so pleased you enjoyed this. Sam's suffering is delicious, is it not? ;)
