Don't feel *too* bad for Castiel--he kinda brought this on himself. And he'll learn more about existence through this experience than any other way. And then he'll rescue Sam and Dean (somehow) and together they'll stop his former self and all will be set on a new path of some sort. And maybe there will be puppies. :3
