chicon

Okay, so I finally got around to ordering a ticket for Chicon. My plan was always to go just for a day--originally I'd planned to drive up Friday stay overnight, go to one day and then leave on Sunday. At this point however, seeing as how I live literally five minutes away from quickreaver, who is going (far as I've heard) for the whole thing, it looks like I ( Read more... )

Chicago native here! I've been talking to quickreaver about this. PM me, bb! :D

p.s. Unless things have changed drastically from Chicon 2010 . . . no metal detectors.

Good yes, excellent. I've only just today looked at the map for the area, but it's not going to be my car so I think I should plan separately for this stuff.

Also good to know about the metal detectors! I mean it never hurts to ask, right? ;)

We'll hash out the details tomorrow during Show, yeah? I should've been cc'ing you on emails. DUR.

Sounds good. Should I come over a bit early so we don't have to talk when it's late and we're both sleepy (or I'm sleepy, anyway)?

No worries on that anyway, I just yesterday ordered the ticket, at this point I don't even have the thing yet. So I'll be there regardless, but I'm pretty flexible about how things work out. ;)

At VanCon, there was at least a ten-minute break after every event, during which time you could wander in or wander out, go to the bathroom, nab something from the dealer's room (if you were speedy), or whatever. It was all pretty flexible. Things were a little more harried for people getting photo ops with the actors, because often the photo ops were the same time as a panel. But if you're just there for the panels themselves, you should be fine.

Also at VanCon, there were various things scheduled during the non-panel times, and as far as I could tell from the tail-ends of them, they were all horribly boring and eminently skippable. At one point my friend and I sat through the last ten minutes of what was maybe supposed to be a trivia game, but was basically just a guy with a powerpoint asking not-even-challenging multiple choice questions (example: Is Sam afraid of plane, clowns, spiders, or flying monkeys?).

Hahaha omg. That's sort of awesome though. Like ultra-post-modernist absurdist humor. Wow.

Are you allowed to bring stuff in to the events? Like, I was thinking food especially. Do they check bags, and could I bring a bookbag or purse? (Snacks, man! There must be snacks or I may resort to gnawing on my neighbors. Reports of my zombie-hood etc etc)

We weren't supposed to bring food or drinks into the ballroom, where the panels were, which I expect might be standard. Presumably you could step outside the ballroom for five minutes if you got the munchies, though. Also the place we were at had water jugs and disposable cups everywhere, which was nice.

There's security people keeping an eye out for people taking video (evidence on YouTube of how well this works), but apart from that and eating food, it looked like you could bring what you wanted: purses, backpacks, etc.

Oh good, so it sounds like I can pack some granola bars or whatever and just nom them between events. Excellent. And I don't plan on filming but wow, do they fail at preventing it anyway. Oy. (That sound you heard is my eyes rolling across the floor.)

Thanks for that! It's those little things in the moment-to-moment activities that can contribute to the quality of an experience. I have such a ridiculous metabolism that I get really grouchy when my blood sugar drops, so yeah. Good to know. *schemes*
