fandom musings

Another reason for me not to participate in big bangs is the anon meme. It would be extremely difficult for me to avoid the urge to go on that thing and say terrible, awful things about my own fic. I can't even imagine how much I would hate whatever fic I eventually wound up writing, and the meme seems like a fantastic place to go and vent about it ( Read more... )

I don't get that urge but then art doesn't really get discussed. I think some of the fic reviews can be pretty helpful when it comes to deciding what to read, YMMV. In any case, it's always saddening to me when the anonmeme impacts someone's fandom activity negatively.

They seem to mostly have nice things to say about art, generally, unless it's really obviously badly photoshopped stuff--which is kinda useful because it's usually art to stuff I'd otherwise never look at. But they seem to love original stuff.

Yah, that sucks a lot. It's like a very very mild version of /b/. >.< I'm glad I'm staying out of it.

I don't know /b/ but I like the anonmeme. IMO it's not mainly about trolling and hiding behind anonymity but I've made the experience that this is not a fruitful discussion to have with people who are against it.

I was thinking specifically of the infamous 4chan. But anyway I've made a habit in my life of having unpopular opinions, especially where groups are involved. Fandom especially makes that a likelihood. At any rate I can see the value of the meme but also the issues, so I'm not going to be out campaigning against it. I just think it's fair game for amusement.

Oh, God, the anon meme. Yeah, I am way too thin-skinned to be able to spend much time there, although generally speaking I do fold like a cheap suit and go check my BB thread every time.

The few times I've been mentioned there, the comments range from "meh" to "seems nice" to "oh my God she's so crazy I will never read her fic again!" (That was in response to an ill-advised discussion I ended up having with Jim Beaver on Twitter, of all things)

In short, I am a delicate snowflake and cannot take the heat, so I mostly avoid it. It never occurred to me to go over and troll my own stories. ;)

I can definitely see how it'd be hard to resist the urge. But I guess if I really were going to do it I'd wait a bit until I didn't care much about the results before checking.

I'm probably a delicate snowflake about my own writing too, though it's hard to say for sure. I mean I'm starting from a point where I know that what I write isn't being put out there for the general fandom readership, so I feel like that gives me an advantage...so maybe it wouldn't matter that much. But hearing bad stuff about something you worked hard on can be a day-ruiner. God knows if I wasn't prone to grumpiness I wouldn't be a writer in the first place.

I remember something about that Twitter convo! (Though not what it was about, sorry.) But frankly for a fandom that boasts people who think Ackles and Padalecki are genuinely IN LURRRVE that seems like a pretty low bar to set for the 'crazy' title.

I bet they came back and read your fic anyway. ;)

Hee! I made a terrible error in judgement and called Jim out on comparing looking at (beautiful) women to looking in at the window of a candy store and not being allowed inside (accompanied by a request to all attractive women on the internet to change their profile pictures so he wouldn't have to suffer). I really should have known better. :P We had a civilized but ultimately unproductive discussion about it.

I hope you encouraged them to change their profile pics to candy.

On the upside, it isn't like that's the weirdest interaction between show fans and those who actually work on it to ever happen. I guess I can see why it would bug some people, but meh. At least if you ever meet him, he'll know who you are.

Give him a candy cane. See how he reacts.
