I'm in the middle of writing some Geek, but there've been a few things on my mind the last week or so. Nothing bad, but it's something I'm thinking deeply about/dwelling on for a long time now having to do with my growing-up. ( It came to a head in just driving down my meme's old street to get a glimpse of her house. )

mem'ries, dreams, weird, fam dramaz

Does anyone else do this/remember this hard? How strong are YOUR memories? I honestly feel strange and very alone in this, cos' in talking to others, they think I'm a bit of a freak in how I remember thingsI think that all of us have strong memories of things that traumatized us, made us happy, afraid. One of my earliest is when family was steaming crabs and someone knocked over a bushel and they were in the basement crawling around. I asked my mom about it as an adult and she was amazed that I remembered that at all as I was only 2. Now for me, I just remember being terrified one of those crabs would eat me; an adult wouldn't have had those fears ( ... )

Omg, crabs! I'd totally remember that one. How freaky... I can see it as if it HAD happened to me, lol. I tink it's cute you thought they'd eat you. Traumatic at the time I'm sure, but adorable all the same. :)

It's funny, cos' there were a few weirdos my mom knew, too, and I can remember them as well. I get the feeling me and you woulda grown up best friends if we'd been the same age/in the same neighborhood. :)

I remember very odd details of things, like how when I lay in bed at night (I was a terrible insomniac as a child) staring at the walls, the way the shadows would flicker across the wall.

As for deliberately imprinting your mind with memory? I remember once thinking (I was in sixth grade), "I never want to forget this year. I will always remember the way the lights in the corridor go on seemingly into infinity." And sure enough, I can still remember it like it was yesterday.

Even now when I feel sad or whatever, I like to take out different awesome eras of my life (or events) and remember them, almost like I'm looking at photographs. :)

***hugs***

I had the same thing happen in sixth grade. We went to school in the old *high* school, gorgeous place. I can tell you where all my classrooms were, how dark and cavernous it was, everything. Weird, isn't it? :)

You need to write your autobiography.

I understand completely. Some memories are just burned in, you know? Nothing will dim them, not even time. Like, I can do a mental walk-through with every house I've ever lived in. Even the first house I can remember from when I was 3, though I can only bring up three of the rooms in my mind but those are crystal clear.

The mind is a weird and wondrous place.

You should be writing a column or fictionalising all this in a book. Loved the glimpses of your childhood. Seems like a great time, in spite of the ups and downs. I have strong memories and can 'go back' whenever I want to almost any time in my life. Not that I'd want to go to some. But I used to be so intensely nostalgic for things, especially Christmases. I suppose those are the sorts of times you remember the adults being happy (or drunk) and paying attention to you. I kept all the photographs from way back in my family but those are the only mementos now.

Interesting idea, perhaps I should. Isn't it funny how we remember? Smells are always intense for me, most especially.

*squeeze*!
