"Michelle Obama is One Inch Taller Than Me," and Other Revelations About Height

Michelle Obama is exactly one inch taller than me.

Last week I went to the doctor for a pre-Japan physical. When my height was measured, I was still 5'9 3/4", the same as the numbers seared into the brain of an insecure 13 year old me. Numbers that were quoted over and over again like some kind of proof of my normality, "Goodness no, I'm not 5'10"! ( Read more... )

Inevitably, you'll get little kids telling your how freaking tall you are (I get it, and I'm only 5'8")--the best response to this, I find, is to remind them that they're only first graders. Everyone is freaking tall. Possibly more hurtful is when they take it upon themselves to inform you that your nose is very, very big. My friend Rick's student (a high school girl, I believe) told him that his nose was like a U-boat.

However, my great angst is that my feet are very large. Like, they're the same size as my dad's feet. I suspect they're even slightly larger than my dad's feet. Women's shoes in Japan go up to 25 cm at the very, very biggest, and mine are a graceful 28 cm. (Men's shoes often stop at 27.5...) However, Uma Thurman has the same size shoe as me. (Of course, she doesn't have to make her own damn costume shoes, now does she?)

Yeah...I'll not be buying shoes in Japan, considering it's hard enough for me to find my size at Macy's!

May you be blessed in your valiant costuming endeavors!! *is jealous that you can sew things* I can hem...on a good day...with my mom's help lol
