But as soon as she shuffled out of the room, she shuffled right into a man with a cane. Not just any cane, but a cane with hot rod flames on it.

It was the first omen that Emma had run into a character, to say the very least.

House was having similar concerns to Emma, really. There was a bottle of ibuprofen in his pocket, but if he was going to hop in a damn ogre rickshaw (or whatever), he was going to need a hell of a lot more than one bottle. And that was being generous. But as he looked at the woman and her incessant cradling of hand sanitizer, he suddenly felt a little bit better.

No one had ever claimed that House wasn't a sadist.

"Great, first person I meet that isn't the size of my hand, and it's a crazy. OCD, right? Hope you have more sanitizer than than that, since I haven't bathed in a week."

It wasn't true, of course. But he wanted to see what would happen.

"Oh!" Emma exclaimed, staring up at the person she'd just bumped into then instantly down at the floor. Her wide eyes blinked at the cane, and her brows raised slightly at the design on it. Flames. That was a first. Most people she saw with canes didn't care to glam them up. Maybe it made him feel good ( ... )

Perfection. OCD patients were far too easy to mess with. House stepped along with her, effectively blocking her way. He could vaguely recall that he had done something like this at Princeton once, but had caused the poor patient to have a panic attack, which, in their poor condition, had led to a heart attack. More vaguely, he could remember Cuddy yelling at him, since she had become the director not long before that. But really, House never really learned from such experiences. Or rarely learned from them.

"Uh-huh. See, problem is, I'm not really going to be too hot on doing that. Because you're the first person I've seen that isn't some deformed midget. And with the modern marvel of portable sanitation," House said dryly. To accentuate the point, the hot rod cane came up to the door frame, cutting off Emma even more.

"So who are you? I thought I was having an extra bad trip while falling asleep to Disney movies again. God, you know how that is, right? What a pain. Point is, are we tripping balls together, or what?"

Emma shook her head in confusion, temporarily forgetting about her dire need to find something vaguely faucet-shaped. "Tripping balls? Don't think I've ever done that before." Was that some sort of new innuendo? A sort of street code for something? She glanced up for a moment, wondering if she'd ever heard a student say it before ( ... )

shower vs. no shower! A desperate clashing of philosphies! WHO WILL SURVIVE? worthpraise May 20 2010, 23:11:57 UTC
Amaterasu has been exploring, because that was the smart thing to do in a new environment. Treasures were hidden everywhere, everything from precious objects to be sold to the simple bones that she loved.

She had followed her nose into one of the many inns - the others had come up empty. Could this really be the one place without anything, or did all these other people already claim them? ...Could she get the bones from them? How many people liked those?

Maybe that was why she wasn't paying as much attention as she should have been - when the door opened, she had to leap back with a yelp to avoid getting hit in the nose.

She peered around the door at the person who had emerged.

THIS WILL NOT END WELL thedoegirl May 20 2010, 23:31:45 UTC
Despite her high hopes, Emma should have known she wasn't going to be able to make it out of her room without interruption. Just her luck. At least it'd be easy enough to just apologize and move on. She opened her mouth to speak.

And saw a pure white dog.

Her mouth slammed shut. She was almost paralyzed with fear. Dogs were never clean, no matter how much their owners wanted to believe a bath would fix things. If they weren't running around outside all the time, they were rolling around on floors, and either way becoming big fluffballs of messes. In short, they were scary as all get out.

Smiling nervously, she looked down at Amaterasu, trying not to make any sudden movements. "Hi there. Um, looking for your owner? It'd be good for you to find him. Or her." She made a tiny shooing motion, hoping that wouldn't set the dog off.

Amaterasu's tail, which had begun wagging hopefully when she first saw Emma, slowed to a halt and drooped. Owner? She didn't have an owner, how could Emma even think such a thing? She drew herself up proudly, sitting square in the middle of the hallway and looking straight at Emma.

Her first bit of horror faded into pure stubbornness. She wasn't being threatening (at least, she was pretty sure she wasn't coming across as threatening, but who knew with people?) but her tight muscles showed how displeased she was.

Uh-oh.

Even if she'd never had a dog and never ever wanted a dog, she knew well enough what that change in stature meant. She'd just and made this dog mad, she could tell. She didn't even stop to think that maybe Amaterasu could understand what she was saying; instead, she automatically assumed that just by doing nothing, the dog didn't like her.

Her terror level rising, Emma shifted her Junogam and hand sanitizer to a spot under her arm, then used her now free hands to make what she hoped was a calming gesture. "Um, easy boy. Or are you a girl? Really, please just calm down, okay?"

Have a little kid who probably could use a long bath song_vanguard May 21 2010, 00:47:06 UTC
Staying still wasn't exactly in Cocona's dictionary, and being tossed in a strange new place wasn't exactly going to change that fact. Ever since she woke up, and more or less understood what was going on, she spent the day exploring the city, only stopping now due to fatigue slowly creeping up on her. How strange, it looked like she woke up in this place, yet she was still tired. Then again, before arriving here, she had spent the entire day fighting her way through the Conductor Activator on top of exploration, maybe this was normal.

Walking down the corridor to where she though she first woke up, she was busy scanning the posts on the strange device she had been handed. She was rather absorbed by the new information coming on the device to actually watch where she was walking.

Bump!

Emma started when she felt something hit her, stumbling a little before managing to catch her balance. It took her a moment to realize that it was actually someone and she blinked. As she worked to regain her precarious grip on her Junogram, she looked at the person before her. Then she adjusted her gaze when she realized the person wasn't quite at her height.

And young. That automatically set her heart beating just a little bit faster.

She wasn't too young--not young enough to send Emma into absolute fits--but still, she was young enough to make her somewhat uncomfortable. High school kids were no better, really, but the preteens...one never knew what they got up to. Or whether or not they'd learned proper hygiene yet. Kids never really seemed to be big on that sort of thing.

"Uh, hi," she said, giving a feeble wave. "Sorry about that."

While she managed to not fall herself, she did lose most of the balance, stepping back and dropping her machine at the same time. "Oh, I'm so sorry," she quickly said, dusting herself off, and answering her wave with one of her own.

Was the woman nervous? That's strange, did she accidentally hurt her during the bump. "I'll be more careful next time, miss. Is everything alright?"

A normal person would have automatically said "Let me get that for you!" and cheerfully picked up the fallen object for her, handing it back with a smile. Emma, however, stared at it like it was an atomic bomb set to go off any second. Who knew where this girl's hands had been? Even if part of her knew she should at least offer to pick it up, she just couldn't risk it.

"Oh, it's no problem," Emma finally replied, pointedly ignoring the fallen Junogam and smiling at Cocona. "Just fine, perfectly fine."

Then she finally got a good look at the person before her. For someone who looked so young, she was really under dressed. Emma gave a disappointed frown. It seemed like little girls these days were trying to get sexy at a younger and younger age. How she was worried about that at a time like this, she didn't know, but stuff like that always bothered her as a guidance counselor.

"Aren't you cold?" she asked, trying to subtly pass along the hint that, hey, maybe you need to cover yourself up, young lady.
