Too busy was Lightning in the middle of her practice that she completely failed to notice a visitor. She exhaled sharply as she jerked to the right, unloading another round of bullets into the practice dummy at the center of the floor before she dove in for a swift roundhouse kick to follow up.
The dummy was tattered, having seen a fair share of slices and bullets in its body to have weathered a war. It clattered to the ground after the kick and she stood there, inspecting the damage as she knelt down beside it, still completely oblivious to Elika's presence.
Elika stayed mum, enraptured by the spectacle Lightning was offering. Growing up in the palace, she'd had the chance to see practice drills for the palace guard; she'd seen her companion fight, her father fight...
She'd never seen a woman fight before.
The princess' eyes remained riveted as Lightning moved, slashing at the mannequin before banking and--Elika blinked. What kind of weapon was that? It wasn't a crossbow; crossbows didn't fire so fast or deal that kind of damage. It looked like a sword....
She was so captivated that she forgot to shift her weight as she leaned against the door, and the added pressure made it slide open with a traitorous creak.
She made a noise under her breath at how fragile the practice dummy was before standing, ready to dig through the closets for a fresh one. She stood from her kneeling position only to hear the sharp, ever so subtle noise of the training doors creaking open.
In one swift movement her gunblade was drawn, the barrel of it aimed towards Elika's face as Lightning cocked her head as if taking aim. It only took her a beat of silence to realize that she wasn't on the battlefield anymore and that's all it took for her to force her accelerated nerves down, slightly lowering her weapon as she did so.
"Can I help you?"
The question seemed polite enough but her cocked eyebrow and tone of voice made it clear that she was more than suspicious of how Elika had masked her presence. She inwardly blamed herself for not noticing but that would have to be saved for later, the more important question here was who was she and what did she want with her?
Elika's reflexes take over and she steps neatly out of the blade's path. Her hands rise in defensive position, her expression one of sheepish alarm. She stared down the gunblade's barrel, her throat dry, and watched as it was slowly lowered.
"I--goodness. I apologize, I was watching you train and didn't want to bother you. You seemed very...focused." It was the truth, and the best she had to offer. She could clearly see that Lightning was suspicious--and in hindsight, maybe it would have been wiser to just walk in--but she was in no position to put up much of an argument.
