The rap on the door came as Diana was writing names of other volunteers on a piece of paper. Most of the fellow travelers had received roommates. And ironically, though many of them would likely be disgruntled by the roommate, Diana would have been glad to have one. Her patience made it hard for her to truly begrudge any person--she would be the ideal roommate. But instead, the room lay empty, so Diana had neatly laid out the things she had collected during the day. She had visited nearly every shop, looking for items she thought would be useful on the journey. Some less conspicuous clothes lay folded neatly on the open bed, but for then, she still wore the Amazon colors ( ... )

For a moment, Edgeworth contemplated--however traitorous that instinct was--simply closing the door on this bizarre vision, turning on his heel, and leaving the caravan. He had not intended to participate in the ride at all, not at first, but the coward's way out was not the path he wished to take ( ... )

"Not at all. I am merely organizing our defense force in the preliminary stages. It is not needed that I reply immediately, especially when my authority is at question," she said coolly, "but I am glad that you do question it. I would rather that you trust me."

Diana offered one end of the lasso to Miles. It glowed with energy, despite being so far from the origin of its power. It was possible for the truth to be taken by just holding it in hand, but it was much more effective to be partially bound by it. It also had a distinct visual effect, but that was just extra, really.

But to make sure he was not too upset by the idea, she warned, "I will need to wrap it around your shoulders before I ask you a personal question, one that you would not freely tell to a stranger. But on my life I swear that your answer will not leave this room."

Truth be told, Edgeworth found he agreed with her--he would have preferred it if he were able to trust her, if he were able to trust anyone. He did not have high hopes for this encounter, but he was no longer the sort of man who formed a conclusion first, and gathered evidence that suited only his theories after. He had committed to doing this, and even now--even with her terms--he was still certain he was right in his decision. He'd come to her of his own free will, and would leave with at least some small peace of mind. Of that much, he could be certain.

Whether he liked the results or not was a different matter.

For a moment, he asked himself whether or not he should have brought a second with him; what one might call a partner. But there was some comfort in chancing this potential embarrassment alone. The fewer people there were to witness this, the better. He closed his eyes, very briefly, then nodded. "I wish to know if what you say is true," he said, words measured. "If these are your conditions, then I accept."
