While Edgeworth has never had the disposition necessary for complete surrender, during the course of the "giant's" journey--and it's subsequent affliction, that incessant earth-shaking, the ground itself betraying him so thoroughly--it was really only a matter of time before the usual reaction occurred. It was an earthquake, of sorts, and despite his ability to acknowledge and process the reasons behind his terror, it still proved...difficult to completely banish the reaction itself.

More was the pity, then--and the absolute humiliation--for it to happen at last in front of Wright.

Better than if it happened while he was alone; he was capable of swallowing his pride at times when it was necessary to do so, and it would stick in his throat more if he were actually conscious for it. Later, he'd have the time and the presence of mind to be embarrassed. For now?

He was passed out on a bed in the inn, perhaps blissfully unaware of the continuation of this enormous farce.

At least Edgeworth had managed to give him something to do before passing out. Typical, that he wouldn't even allow himself to lose consciousness without making sure there'd be some work getting done in the meantime. True to form--and despite his concern regarding the current situation--Phoenix had managed to get a message off to this Nodoka girl. Then, he'd left the room quietly, opting to wait downstairs for her to arrive at the inn. He thought he might be able to explain the situation just slightly better in person; hopefully without betraying too much of Edgeworth's well-cherished privacy ( ... )

Nodoka flushed, jumping when a figure stepped forward. She had, at first, assumed it to be Edgeworth, but her eyes widened a little when his - friend? Associate? Colleague? She wasn't entirely sure - stepped forward and introduced himself. Still, she smiled and shook hand lightly, stepping back and bowing quickly after. She was aware of the differences between Western and Japanese greetings, but she had to keep her own politeness up to form, especially when she was, she assumed, sharing secrets with this person. It was a little uncomfortable, but she swallowed her discomfort and smiled weakly ( ... )

Phoenix followed Nodoka's gaze, looking between the corner and her as though trying to make a decision. Whoever he'd been expecting, it definitely hadn't been this shy, polite young girl. Fortunately, he has some experience with sheltered young people, even if he never quite settles into being comfortable around them.

"That's fine," he assured her, starting slowly toward the corner, then waiting for her to follow. "I'm really sorry Edgeworth couldn't make it. But... We work together, like I said. And I'm sure he wouldn't have asked me to meet with you if he didn't think what you had to share might be important."

There, that much should reassure her, at least, that Phoenix intended on taking her seriously. And that he definitely wasn't going to go blabbing about her secret to just anyone. He'd never say this aloud, but he was kind of shocked that their informant was a young girl. What kind of information could she have? Unless... Maybe she knows something about the kidnapping. That would certainly explain her current...attitude. Not ( ... )
