Singapore Math?

Does anyone have any experience with Singapore Math? My daughter is 7 and we've finished most of the first grade-level math requirements, just a few pages left in a Kumon subtraction workbook. I'm looking to try something else for grade 2 because getting her to complete the Kumon worksheets has become a huge struggle. We also use Brainquest, ( Read more... )

Currently working on workbook 1A with my almost 6 year old. I like the way it goes over each concept many times. I like that I can understand and teach the concepts. I like how things are broken down into small easily digested pieces. It is a bit repetitive but for now that suits my son. I hope to finish workbooks 1A and 1B by the time he enters first grade in the fall.

We didn't care for Singapore...but LOVE Miquon. I really like the way it sets up the stage for higher math starting at book 1 (first semester, 1st grade). Its having them solve simple addition and subtraction problems using algebra...brilliant!

This is one site for learning styles. There are others that use other philosophies. (Yes, it's a quagmire.) Choosing the best math curriculum depends on your child's style of learning and your style of teaching. (I homeschooled from Pre-K, and graduated my first in 2010. She is doing well in college, now.) The first did well with Houghton-Mifflin, which is used in public schools. My second thought it was boring and too slow. For her, I used Alpha and Omega Lifepacs, because she could skip what she considered to be boring, and then test out of that workbook. Sometimes, the standard explanations were too slow and redundant for her, but we had no money to spend on trying to find the 'perfect' curriculum. I used what was available to me.

The older one is studying Architecture, and the younger plans to be a scientist.

The first year, I bought both textbooks and workbooks, but I found that there was plenty of practice in the textbooks, so that's all I buy now. I know lots of people who use Singapore, and all of them have chose to use either the textbooks or the workbooks.

I do really like Singapore. My oldest finished the final book last year, and my youngest will start with the Early Bird books in the fall. I have 4 kids with different learning styles, and so far, Singapore has worked well for all of them.
