Hello - I'm a long-time homebrewer who's just recently started reading on the subject of distilling. I had this notion that distilling from grain alcohol would basically involve making hopless beer and then running it through the still, but my reading indicates that there are two other significant differences between beer meant for drinking and " ( Read more... )

Boiling is the first method employed to clarify a finished beer (preciptates proteins). In a finished distillate this filtering is achieved in the distillation process. In the mean time it doesn't hurt anytihng being there. As well, there is trace alcohol residue in what you or I'd call trub or lees in beer-making which is otherwise lost. If there's some kind of glop with alcohol in it distillation will extract it and it will not go to waste.
