Prologue
Chapter 1 Chapter 2
Yoochun watched Yunho grab the young boy’s face with hate for the Soryeong building up in him. He couldn’t quite place why he wanted to protect a person he had never met before, but his rage nearly exploded out of him when he watched Yunho yell in the boy’s face. If the guy that was accused of being a woman hadn’t snapped back at Yunho, he would have done it himself. Yoochun was too far away to hear what the Soryeong said next, but judging by the boy’s silence it was conversation-ending. He waited impatiently until Yunho had passed by him and laughed softly.
Yunho reacted exactly how Yoochun had expected; he stopped abruptly and turned his head to the side. “Is there something funny Ideungbyeong?”
Yoochun immediately ceased his laughter but kept a smug grin plastered on his lips.
Yunho’s eyes narrowed and he walked back to Yoochun’s spot in line. “I asked you if you thought something was funny,” Yunho said coldly, inching closer to Yoochun’s face.
Yoochun returned Yunho’s icy glare along with a slight smile. “I just think it’s funny that you pick on newbies for kicks. And I’m not an Ideungbyeong.”
Yunho cocked his head and intensified his glare. “What?”
“I’m not an Ideungbyeong,” Yoochun repeated slowly, emphasizing each word.
Yunho decided to switch his approach. He softened his glare and raised an amused eyebrow. “Oh? Then I take it you’re one of our American’s huh?” Yoochun nodded in reply. “Well then,” Yunho laughed softly, then hissed in perfect English, “Welcome to hell.”

Jaejoong and Junsu didn’t say a word to each other or anyone else until they came back to their Resident after dinner. They had been assigned to different bunks with one bed in between them. The twins had always shared a room with beds right beside each other and Jaejoong felt as if the few feet of distance was an eternity away. He cast longing glances at his brother while he tried to make his small bed somewhat more homey. He hardly even noticed the pair of legs hanging over the edge of the bed above him.
“Hey! Are you listening to me?” the voice above him shouted as the owner leaned over the edge.
Jaejoong jumped at the sound and slammed his head on the bar over him. “Sorry…” he muttered, rubbing the sore place on his head.
The other man swung himself over the edge and landed beside Jaejoong with his hand outstretched. “Donghae,” he introduced himself simply.
Jaejoong wearily took Donghae’s hand and shook it lightly. “Jaejoong…” he said softly.
Donghae scanned his eyes over Jaejoong with a slight smile after he released his hand. “Oh Yunho’s going to have fun with you,” he stated matter-of-factly.
“Y-Yunho?” the first thought that came to Jaejoong’s mind was the master pervert in jail that had the intention of raping every guy he could get to. There weren’t really those kinds of people in the military too, right?
Donghae nodded. “He’s the Soryeong who probably yelled at you when you got here. You know, Soryeong Jung?”
Jaejoong’s eyes widened. Was that why he accused me of being a woman? Because he wanted me?? “What exactly do you mean by fun?” he asked, half afraid of the answer.
“He’ll work your ass to death in training,” Donghae replied.
Jaejoong sighed in relief. He could handle training. “How long have you been here?” he asked, switching to a slightly more comfortable subject.
Donghae stared at the ceiling in thought for a few seconds. “Six months I think.”
“Six months??”
Donghae nodded. “The drills never really stuck with me so I’ve had to get them pounded into my head for a little longer than everyone else.”
Jaejoong groaned. So they would keep him here if they didn’t think he was good enough? He cast another longing gaze at Junsu, but the latter was already on his way over with his arms crossed and lips pushed out in a pout.
“This isn’t fair,” Junsu whispered with his eyes locked on his bunk.
“What’s not fair?” Jaejoong whispered back.
Junsu nodded toward the man standing in front of the bunk’s ladder. “I wanted to top…”
Jaejoong blinked at his brother. “You wanted to what now??”
“I wanted the top bunk!” Junsu whined.
Jaejoong shook his head briskly. “Yeah, of course that’s what you said.”
Junsu shifted his gaze to look at Jaejoong with question in his eyes. “What did you think I said?”
Jaejoong shrugged. “Oh nothing. Why don’t you just ask the other guy if you can switch with him?” he asked.
“Didn’t you listen Hyung? Jungnyeong Park said that nobody was allowed to switch, no matter what.” Junsu sighed. “And I really don’t want to cause trouble on our first night here…”
“Oh right. I knew that,” Jaejoong mumbled. He suddenly remembered his bunkmate’s presence and turned to Donghae. “Oh, this is my brother Junsu,” he said, gesturing to his twin.
Donghae held his hand out like he had for Jaejoong, but Junsu pointedly ignored him and returned his gaze to the man who was still frozen in front of the ladder. Junsu walked back to his bunk without a word of goodbye and flung himself on his bed.
Yoochun just stood at the base of the ladder, staring at it. There was not way in hell he was going to sleep on the top bunk for the next few months. No way. He didn’t even bother to move when his bunk mate flung himself onto the bed beside him. He continued to stare, not daring to ascend the ladder, for several more minutes until a small voice from beside his waist broke the silence.
“Are you going to just stand there?” the voice asked.
Yoochun didn’t spare his bunkmate a glance. “I’m afraid of heights…” he muttered, half hoping that the man didn’t hear him.
Junsu slowly came out from under the bed to stand beside Yoochun, his sympathy taking over. He stared at the ladder also, biting his lip slightly. “It’s not all that high,” he said softly.
Yoochun flickered his gaze to Junsu’s innocent face. “I know. I just… can’t sleep that way.”
Junsu climbed up the ladder and held his hand out to Yoochun. “Come on.”
Yoochun hesitated before very slowly following Junsu’s example. Junsu scooted over when he finally sat onto the mattress. He slightly leaned over the edge and took a calming breath before turning to see Junsu’s friendly smile. Yoochun forgot for a moment where he was when he saw that smile. It reached the younger man’s eyes, unlike all of the fake smiles he had lived with for the past year. “Park Yoochun,” he said, offering his hand and reflecting Junsu’s smile.
“Kim Junsu,” Junsu mumbled, taking Yoochun’s hand. For a second he didn’t want to let go of the other, but a sickeningly sweet voice forced them to jerk apart.
“What’s going on up there?” Leeteuk asked from the foot of Junsu’s bed. He still had his new-trainee smile painted on his lips to mask his deep hate for being in this position at all. How was he supposed to be Heechul’s right hand man if he was all the way on the other side of the camp? “I’m pretty sure that only one person was assigned to each bed. And I hope you’re aware of the rule I explained on the training field will be very strictly enforced.
A light pink graced Junsu’s cheeks. “I’m sorry. We were just-”
“I don’t care what you were doing. My point was that you should separate yourselves,” Leeteuk said. He waited for Junsu to return to his bed before he continued. “Lights will be out at eight thirty every night and everyone will be up at four every morning. If you are out of your bed between those times, you will be punished. Understand?”
Junsu nodded without looking anywhere but at his hands. He waited for Leeteuk to walk a little further before going back to the ladder. “By the way, thanks for sticking up for me earlier in the lineup…” he whispered.
Yoochun kept his eyes on the mattress below him. “Hm? Oh, yeah. No problem. I can’t stand jerks like that, Soryeong or not.”
**~**~**~**~**
Changmin stole away from his resident to join up with Yunho in the officer’s quarters, shortly followed by Dongwook. Sure they were leaving their trainees unattended, but the back door in their rooms prevented the trainees from knowing that. They were having a mini welcome back party for Yunho and not even the overseers wanted to miss out. Besides, Changmin had been the one to plan the whole thing. Then again, he planned for Yunho to be enjoying it, but judging by the way he was scowling at the wall with his face partly covered by a cup, not everything was going as planned. Changmin carefully approached the Soryeong. “Having fun Hyung?” he asked somewhat cheerfully.
Yunho whipped around and shot daggers out of his eyes. “What the fuck do you want?” he snapped.
“A portable music player smaller than my hand that lights up,” Changmin answered caustically, emphasizing his sarcasm by rolling his eyes. He pulled a nearby chair closer to him and sat in it backwards, facing Yunho. “What’s bothering ya?”
“That damn American…” Yunho said, raising his cup to his lips and taking a short sip. “He had the audacity to stand up to me. Hah! His ass is mine in training. He’ll see… Oh and that girl they sent us…”
“Wait a second,” Changmin interrupted. “What girl?”
Yunho sighed and took another drink. “One of the new trainees is really good looking, almost like a girl.”
“Ohh, I know who you’re talking about. He was the one wearing the black and white shirt, right?” Yunho nodded. “He’s hot.”
Yunho nearly spit his drink out. “What did you just say???” he shouted.
Changmin gasped and put on a mischievous grin. “Hyung are you blushing?”
Yunho turned away from the younger with a scowl. “Hell no I’m not blushing…” But he could feel the heat spreading across his cheeks. He rested his chin in his palm and glared at Changmin from the corner of his eye. He was only blushing because of Changmin’s stupidity, of course. ((a/n: **cough cough**)) Deciding to clear his mind of the other’s stupidity, he focused on Leeteuk who was slinking his way to Heechul’s room. Of course, Yunho thought, Hyung can’t be away from his Cinderella for more than two seconds without going insane… Yunho grinned at the thought, letting his mind wander to the stupid things the Jungnyeong had done to impress Heechul back when they were only trainees themselves.
Leeteuk was in absolutely no mood for the party. At the moment, he wanted nothing to do with anyone but Heechul. Sucking up to the Daeryeong was generally easy, and he would have to be doing a heck of a lot of it if he had any hopes of being relieved from his temporary position as Resident A’s overseer. He wasn’t going down without a fight, no matter how sickeningly obedient he was going to have to be to win that fight. After all, that was his only hope unless by some miracle Heechul happened to find anyone better than him for the job. Leeteuk couldn’t help but laugh at that thought; there was no one better, both he and Heechul knew that. Still, he had to try. He strode past a scowling Yunho and laughing Changmin straight to the Daeryeong’s room.
“What do you want Leeteuk?” Heechul asked, continuing to stare at the ceiling from his bed. He didn’t say it cruelly, but Leeteuk could feel the iciness in his tone.
Leeteuk bowed deeply and smile played on his lips when he rose to see Heechul’s face; not the kind of smile he gave trainees, but the one he reserved especially for the man in front of him. “I wanted to see if there was anything I could do for you sir,” he offered, his voice dripping with sweetness.
“Did you really leave your trainees alone to suck up to me?” Heechul asked calmly. His eyes on the other hand spoke of a different emotion.
Leeteuk stared with his mouth open for a second as he tried to come up with a reasonable answer, or at least one that wouldn’t piss the Daeryeong off, none of which included the truth.
Heechul sat up and spoke before Leeteuk could answer. “Go back to your Resident and never do this again.”
“But sir, the others aren’t in their Residents either,” Leeteuk pointed out, trying to save himself. “They’re partying right outside your door!”
Heechul’s eyes burned holes into the other’s face as he held his gaze. “Yes I know that. I authorized it the moment of Yunho’s return. Jungnyeong Shim thought it would be a good idea and so did I, so there is nothing wrong with it. Now go back to whatever it was you were doing and leave me alone.”
Leeteuk thought for a second and decided on a bold move. Maybe too bold considering Heechul already seemed to be mad at something. “Are you going to join us in the party sir?” he asked quietly.
The corner of Heechul’s mouth twitched up into a momentary smile. “Yes actually, I think I will,” he answered, standing and walking out of his room with Leeteuk at his heels. He knew very well what the Jungnyeong was trying to do, but he decided to humor him for a little bit and get some fun out of it. Parties in camp 409 didn’t come very often after all.
The officers bowed deeply when Heechul made his presence known. The Daeryeong waved them off and sauntered to Yunho and Changmin who were still going at their squabble over the woman-like trainee. Yunho instantly bowed when he saw Heechul, but Changmin just handed him a drink as if he was just a good friend.
Leeteuk and Yunho went into panic mode when he saw Changmin’s careless action.
There was a very tense pause before a smile graced Heechul’s lips and he took the drink from the youngest with a small nod. “I see you’re enjoying yourself Changmin,” he said casually, taking a very small sip.
Changmin grinned. “You should try it some time sir,” he said, giving an almost invisible wink to Leeteuk.
Leeteuk instantly lowered his head at the gesture. How was it that Changmin could do just about anything he wanted with Heechul when he was the Daeryeong’s most trusted officer? If he ever said something like that to Heechul he would have been scolded for sure, while all Changmin got was a smile. Not only that, but Changmin was the only one who knew of his secret admiration for Heechul, and it wasn’t just a respectful admiration either.
Heechul turned his attention from Changmin to Yunho. “I don’t believe I had a chance to formally welcome you back Soryeong Jung,” he said. The second he looked away from Changmin, his smile changed ever so slightly. It would have gone unnoticed by anyone except Leeteuk, and Leeteuk noticed big time.
**~**~**~**~**
Jaejoong had pretty much lost track of time since he got to camp 409, but he was pretty sure it must have been late since everyone else around him was sound asleep. At least he thought all of them were. Now was his chance to get a shower without having to fear anyone else seeing him. He knew very well that nobody was allowed out of their beds after Leeteuk had made it clear that it was eight o’clock, but he also knew that he didn’t want to be naked with God knows how many other naked men in the same room; it would be just plain weird. Besides, if he went about it right, nobody would know he had been gone.
As carefully and as silently as humanly possible, Jaejoong slipped out of his bed and toward the front door, making sure to check on Junsu as he went. He stopped by his brother’s bed for only a second before Junsu’s eyes fluttered open. “Hyung!! What are you doing??” he hissed. “Get back in bed before you get caught!”
“I have to take a shower Su,” Jaejoong whispered back.
“We all get to in the morning. Just wait a few hours.”
Jaejoong shook his head. “I can’t. It’d be too weird.”
Junsu rolled his eyes, even though he knew it would be hard for Jaejoong to see the gesture in the dark. “I’m sure you can restrain yourself for five minutes Hyung. Stare at the wall the whole time or something.” The comment earned him a light smack to his head.
“That’s not what I was talking about!” Jaejoong’s head snapped up when he heard rustling right above him, followed by a drawn out groan. Both he and Junsu froze at the sound. Jaejoong waited for a few seconds for the rustling to subside and bent down to whisper into his brother’s ear. “I’ll be right back. Try to get some sleep.” He didn’t wait to hear Junsu’s reply before slipping out the front door.
Jaejoong wondered around the camp, hidden by shadows, trying his best to dig around in his memory for bits and pieces of what Leeteuk said about which building was which. But unfortunately, he couldn’t remember the Jungnyeong saying anything about showers. So he continued to wander around until he came upon a chamber with a huge water tank positioned at its wall and pipes leading into the cement side. We have a winner! Jaejoong thought with a triumphant smile.
He took a quick look around before he slid into the small building. Just as he thought, the door led into a room with six showerheads hanging over six wooden stalls. Again, he scanned his surroundings to see if anyone was around and gave himself a mental ‘okay’ before stripping down and stepping into the furthest stall from the door. As he let the water run over his body he kept glancing over his shoulder, paranoid the someone would walk in on him at any minute. And he had to be honest with himself, he was more afraid of being seen exposed than of being caught out after their curfew. He was positive that whatever punishment was to befall of him wasn’t nearly as bas as humiliation.
Jaejoong took as little time as possible to wash himself (mainly his hair) and just a little longer to enjoy the water, even though it was freezing cold. I could get used to this, he thought, it’s quiet and I don’t have to worry about any one timing me… With a small smile on his face, he shut off the water and came out of the stall to get his clothes. Only then did he realize that he didn’t have a towel to dry off with.
**~**~**~**~**
Yunho glanced at the clock for the hundredth time since Heechul had joined them. It was finally late enough for him to be able to use taking a shower as an excuse to get away from the party. He had to admit, it was nice and all for Changmin to set it up for him, but there was only so much of this fake respect stuff a person could take. “I’m going to hit the showers so, I’ll… be back in a few minutes,” Yunho announced to the small group around him before standing and stretching his arms.
“Yeah, me too,” Changmin said, following Yunho’s actions.
Heechul looked up at Changmin with a smile in his eyes that of course only Leeteuk noticed. “I might go in a minute as well,” he said.
Leeteuk nearly exploded at his words. He wished he could say that he’d be going as well, but he defiantly didn’t want to be saluting the Daeryeong in the showers. So he just nodded and put on a fake smile. “Do you want me to get your clothes and towel sir?” he asked in one last attempt to suck up.
“Yes, go do that,” Heechul replied with a dismissive wave. As Yunho and Changmin left, he decided to grace some other officers with his presence, occasionally looking over his shoulder and awaiting Leeteuk’s return.
Yunho walked across the dark campgrounds with Changmin humming quietly by his side. He didn’t want the younger (or anyone for that matter) to be with him, but you can’t exactly be choosy in a military camp when you’re only a Soryeong. The pair made their way to the officer’s showers and Yunho let himself in first, only to see an angel bright and shining before him, with its back facing the door. Yunho’s mouth dropped and all color in his face vanished.
Jaejoong jerked his head toward the door as two officers came in. He was done for now. The officer he had a confrontation with that afternoon was staring at him with his mouth hanging open slightly while the other was struggling to hide the amusement on his face. They didn’t really look like they were going to punish him… or at least not yet anyway. Even though his mind was screaming at him to run, his body was too shocked to listen, so he stayed in place, staring at the officers like a deer in headlight.
“Oh my God!” Changmin cried, finally surrendering to his smile. “Look Hyung, he is hot!”
Yunho and Jaejoong both blushed furiously at the comment, but the moment was cut short when Heechul came into the room with Leeteuk dutifully at his heels.
All heads turned to the Daeryeong except for Yunho’s which stayed staring at Jaejoong’s naked form, barely noticing that Heechul had come in at all. His mind was at a standstill and his eyes were taking in every inch of Jaejoong’s body. He’s so skinny… Yunho though, and his skin is so… white. It’s intoxicating…
The corner of Heechul's mouth twitched before he broke out into a wicked smile. "And what, may I ask, in God's name do you think you're doing in here trainee?" he queried in a quiet voice loud enough for all of them to hear clearly.
Jaejoong snatched his clothes and held them over himself before turning around to fully face Heechul. "I-I-I... was j-just taking a sh-shower...." he stammered, staring at the floor.
"In the officer showers?" Heechul's face was riddled with amusement at Jaejoong's fear. He had never caught a trainee in the officer showers before, especially not after curfew.
"I-I'm sorry. I d-didn't know..." Jaejoong answered. Now he had really done it.
Heechul's smile spread more as he turned to Leeteuk. "No matter. You're out after curfew anyway. Leeteuk, take care of him." With that Heechul exited the showers, completely forgetting about why he went there in the first place; busting a trainee with something like this was just that much fun.
Changmin stared at Leeteuk. "Are you going to do it?" he whispered.
Jaejoong shifted his gaze from the floor to Leeteuk with horror in his eyes. He didn't think that getting caught would be such a big deal, but all of them had seen him exposed and the Daeryeong had a frightening aura around him as he left. Do what? he thought, not sure that he wanted to know.
Leeteuk glared at Changmin. "Of course I'm going to! He broke two very important rules in one move. Why the hell wouldn't I?"
Changmin bit his lip and glanced at the trembling Jaejoong. "It's not like he hurt anything... Besides, he's new so he probably really didn't know," he pointed out.
"He broke curfew Changmin! It doesn't matter if he knew or not, he still broke the rules. But hey, you can go defy Heechul's orders if you want to. Me on the other hand, I'm taking him to the chambers."
Yunho snapped back to reality. "No!" he shouted.
"And why not?" Leeteuk asked, switching his glare to focus on Yunho.
"Nobody is sent to the chambers just for braking curfew!" Yunho knew what going to the chambers meant; he had been a first hand witness to the torture when he was a trainee, and something in his mind screamed at him to keep Jaejoong from that fate.
"Yes, but he didn't just brake curfew. Have you forgotten where we are Yunho?" Leeteuk said. "More importantly, have you forgotten exactly who gave the order?" Only silence answered him. He nodded his head toward Jaejoong. "Get your clothes on and then follow me, understand?"
"Y-yes sir..." Jaejoong replied, hurriedly yanking on his clothes.
Yunho narrowed his eyes and stared at the floor. Of course, no matter what Heechul tells Leeteuk to do it is always done. Always.
