Quick thoughts on the Roberts confirmation

The pick pissed off the conservatives a lot less than I thought it would. Instead of nominating a hellfire and brimstone absolutist in the tradition of Bork and Scalia, Bush has nominated a mild-mannered midwesterner who deals in pragmatics rather than doctrine. He's a mysterious candidate, and a shrewd pick from bush, as he basically appeases his conservative base and eliminates most chances of Roberts being filibustered.

Much of the conservative response is positive, but a few like Ann Coulter (can I say that name in your blog?) are pretty mad he didn't go for a more hard-core conservative pick.

And You never know.. he could turn out to be more liberal than Ruthie Ginsburg.

I personally would've nominated Judge Ito.. or maybe Judge Judy..
