I finally started on Ivyblossom's The Quiet Man, and holy shit. That fic deserves every single one of the accolades it's getting. I'm especially in awe of the author's extremely deep and poignant use of first person narrative. It's beautiful. ;_; Go read - it's one of the slowest, deepest, most satisfying reunion stories you'll ever read. I mean, ( Read more... )

I'm following it avidly.

The Progress of Sherlock Holmes, her other fic, is a story I come back to again and again, even when I have piles of new fic clamouring to be read.

For some reason, I've been afraid to touch that one. Maybe with my trip looming, it's the perfect thing to load on my kindle even though it's a WIP, right?

But 30 chapter for Sherlock to come back? Jeeze - I don't know if I can handle that.

I know it sounds like a lot, but it really does work. It's John-POV all the way through and it's excellent and heart-breaking. And the chapters aren't long - it's at 44 chapters now but it's still "only" 110,000 words, so IdunnobecauseIcan'tdomath but that means the chapters are around 3,000 words, something like that? You'll speed through it.

But yeah, it is a WIP (59 planned chapters), though the updates are quite regular as far as I can tell. I do recommend it very much :)

But if you're looking for a non-WIP: the one iamshadow recommended, The Progress of Sherlock Holmes, also by ivyblossom, is complete and absolutely beautiful, as well (what I've read of it, which is all of two chapters, but those were already really impressive).

Yes, it's one of the richest, most satsifying readings, an amazing work of art. The first person narrative is admirably done. Having read the "Progress of Sherlock Holmes" 10 times or more, I am slowly savouring this new WIP and wholeheartedly recommend it to all sherlockians.

Oh man, thanks for the reminder - I had lost track of that one waiting for an update. I'll put it on my list of WIPs to track :)

That fic has such an amazing, unique voice. Like nothing I've seen in fic so far. Brilliant and terribly sad...
