Death is Present

Yesterday morning we took my old cat into the vet's to have her euthanized. We'd had her since she was 6 weeks old, and I was 8 I believe. That was a particulary tumultuous year and I needed some stability and something to focus on. Enter Smudge. I always felt safe when I held her or snuggled up to her, like she kept the demons away. I'm really sorry. It's awful that being long-lived humans we're forced to outlive our closest companions. My dog is dying, and I've had her since I was four. It's really hard having to be the one who decides when they go, too. I'm sorry.

Smudge loved you, and you loved Smudge. What more can one say?

Only this-our relationships with animals are always less complicated and far more pure than those we have with people. That's why it's so heart-wrenching to let them go. We have no mixed feelings about them. It's just love, love, and more love.

True. And they teach us over-complicatimg humans about the meanings of love. The debt we owe the wee little furries for their instruction is imp[ossible to repay. That one's oldest friend need only be addressed by a look in the eyes is so hard to learn...There'sa a hook there that lasts forever. I've been seeing that bloody cat everywhere for a week. To the point where it can't be all me. It's ridiculous already.
