Mmmmm, Watson backstory. And a little tidbit of Morstan backstory, too!

:D Thank you! I had fun thinking up those bits for both of them!

Good god, but that was lovely. The nested stories within stories -- the moment they're currently in, earlier holidays with Mary, Watson's time in Afghanistan, the story he traditionally gives for his enlistment and the story he gives this time -- and Holmes' wry, affectionate melancholy over it all. It is such a rich and lovely portrait of these two, and even moreso of the terms of their friendship. Reticent Watson may be, but he is willing to share, and that he's willing to share this freely in this moment... He may have accepted more of what is coming than Holmes realizes.

It really is a lovely story. (And makes me wish that it wasn't winter, because it's been a good long while since I've been up a mountain. Your photo-tour made me very nostalgic for the Sierra, which -- once you're up away from the desert, in any case -- look very much like that.)

Researching this made me put the Gemmi pass on my bucket list -- can you tell? I grew up in Colorado and I miss the mountains so much.

I didn't think about the stories being nested in there, but you're right. So many bits of the past for Holmes to learn, and so little time for him to do it. I think that in many ways those days of running from Moriarty may have been some of the best they ever had together, despite the danger.

Thank you. I really appreciate your insights, and comment!
