Wonderful Anon Author, I have read and re-read this about half a dozen times today and it gets no less magical with each re-reading. I love the characterizations, and how thoughtfully and fully you created "their" world. And the story itself, the plot and telling, is perfect! I love it! Thank you!

I'm sad to say I haven't watched Lee's Golden Years duo (and am ashamed to admit that I couldn't spot the Giants reference!) but I laughed out loud at both the reference to Darwin's bees/cats linkage and Holmes' involvement in the Piltdown hoax. (It was a just revenge, after Doyle besmirched-by-association Holmes' name with that fairies business! btw, have you seen Murder on the Bluebell Line, in which Holmes and Watson attempt to uncover the hoaxer's identity in order to salvage Doyle's reputation and save themselves from unmaking? I can't strictly say I recommend it, but it is a thing that exists.)

But what I liked best was the frank appreciation of the value of "a Watson": Watson's homage to Mary, and Holmes' willingness to take a turn playing "the role of John Watson" while Watson himself leads the way.

And, I daresay, Watson will lead the way very competently! With, as you note, at least one mad chase before they're done.
