I nearly wept with joy when I read the story summary, but I promptly forgot to weep because you so effectively swept me off to the Downs and painted such a tender portrait of mature love that it took my breath away. And then, of course, curiosity took over and I had find out how Watson gained his Holmes and vice versa. I adore the way you've captured Watson's voice in all its romantic effusiveness - had I not re-read Musgrave recently, I would have no idea where Doyle's words ended and yours began. There's beautiful attention to physical and emotional detail, like the way that Watson's relief at Holmes's recovery colors autumn countryside and Holmes's face in such rich hues, and you foreshadow the revelation of Musgrave's and Holmes's past so delicately that I thought I'd imagined it until Musgrave's first conversation with Watson. It's an unpleasant but perfectly explicable surprise that Holmes succumbs to his vice when bringing Watson into Musgrave's orbit, and I love the way that it brings together Watson's understanding of Holmes
