THE OFFICIAL WORD ON THE REPO! VS. REPO SAGA

Mar 16, 2010 12:01

Darren Lynn Bousman, director of Repo! The Genetic Opera has ordered a "call to arms" but...not for what many may think. DLB has told all loyal followers/lovers of Repo! to actually go out and see Repo Men. Not only that, but he wants them (myself, included) to do so opening weekend. And, and, and! On top of that, he'll be financially ( Read more... )

You know what it was, twin? Ignorance (not in the "lulz, you so stoopid way but, more that people just don't know anything about the whole "vs" situation). People see Repo Men's existence 'cuz it's big time, see Repo! by accident, and then say that Repo! copied off of RM and it's like...*sigh* Maybe 1 in 5 people will bother looking up which came first, the chicken or the egg. RM would always get the credit since it's a bigger production and Repo! would always be the "copycat". :( And, honestly, I feel like DLB; whether what I have to say is positive or negative, I'm fucking exhausted from talking about it already, lol. Like, omg, someone get me a beer and some porn, sit me in a corner, and let me heal. :-p

Monty Python's guys were first, long before REPO whenever, are they one or other paid them for this extremely disgusting and funny idea?

The argument was never about payment, tbh.

Yes I know, but it's looks like only few people remeber that idea was used by Monthy Python.

~*unpopular/irrelevant/I just watched In Bruges and I'm raging and incoherent opinion time*~

I never liked the original Repo. :\ I couldn't get past the first 20 minutes. However, a friend of mine LOVES it, so I wanted to try and join in her excitement. (Sorry bb, but it was god awful, imho). I also think Repo Men looks amazing, and I would go see it in a heartbeat.... were it not for the insane amount of gore.

As it stands, I can't watch either of them.

But hurray for the creator standing up for both his own creation, and a similar project. It's always heartening to be reminded that there are people in the world who want to see something succeed, even if there's controversy behind it. (I'd also like to point out that the two look completely different, for however weight my opinion carries. Sure, there's definitely a similar idea, but the executions (no pun intended) seem miles apart).

Oh, gurl, there is so much going on behind the scenes with these two but we're gonna just leave it all be now. :-P It's a shame you can't at least watch Repo Men for Judesie though! :O Maybe someone should watch it first and then, when you see it with them, they can warn you about forthcoming gore?! I mean...it's buff!Jude and no one should miss that! *pet pet*

Haha, maybe. I'd have to have ample time to close my eyes and plug my ears, though.

It sucks that I can't handle gore. I mean, I'm attempting to watch Inglorious Basterds, but I got 26 minutes in, (right after the part where he graphically skins a nazi) and had to step away. I'll go back to it, one day!

OH YES, if you can't handle gore, haha. inglorious basterds is not for you.

my mom is that way too - she just can't handle it, and i can take gore but not creepy things??? so like, i can't stand thrillers but i love gory action flicks.

hopefully some brave soul will post the hot bits on youtube eventually ;)

Seriously? I had no idea this was even an issue.

Wow. That people would boycott a movie because of a similar story is kinda..stupid. And would doom Hollywood as we know it. (I'm looking at YOU, Avatar!)

Really. Wow. Some people think way too much about stupid stuff. "Oh noes, I can't see THAT movie because this other movie had the same idea BUT DID IT A TOTALLY DIFFERENT WAY THROUGH MUSIC AND INTERPRETIVE DANCE!"

Also, the reasons given? Really?

"I liked this movie musical about the same topic so therefore I can't see this non musical because someone somewhere might rent the musical by mistake, not realize it was made first and trash talk it as unoriginal."

Just...wow.

There's legitimate basis for complaints, then there's butthurt over things that haven't happened yet.

This whole "vs." controversy is the latter.

I keep saying it's a lot more complicated than so many people are making it out to be but a lot of people seem to not care about that. That's all fine and good as no one is saying they have to. But it does go way beyond a few "similarities" and ti's not "stupid stuff" if you're the person who's idea got ripped off in so many ways that it's basically like watching the same movie with slightly different dialogue. As for what has or hasn't happened yet (re: the "vs" situation), the controversy has been going on for awhile because people have been seeing promotion for Repo Men on tv/in print and, upon coming across anything Repo! related, have blown up the email boxes/message boards of both creators of Repo! (Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich) as well as DLB, claiming that Repo! is the rip off. Hence, the "butthurt".

I've said elsewhere that I wasn't in favor of a boycott but I'm also not going to tell someone, who IS in favor of one, that they're being stupid.
