Chapter Two
The strong odor of Mozzie's peanut butter and (sugar-free) jelly sandwich made Neal's stomach lurch unhappily.
"Are you alright, Neal?" demanded Alex Hunter, the third member of the "Troublesome Trio", as the teachers referred to Mozzie, Neal, and Alex.
"I'm fine," Neal stubbornly insisted.
Alex huffed.
"If you're fine, then I'm the President," she declared.
Neal promptly stuck his hand out to Alex and said, "it's an honor to meet you, Madame President."
Alex and Mozzie both glared at Neal.
"Neal, you haven't even touched your lunch," Mozzie pointed out, "and you look absolutely terrible now."
"I don't want to be a burden on Peter, Moz," Neal admitted, "I don't want him changing his mind about fostering me."
"You are an idiot, Neal George Caffrey," Alex declared, "Agent Burke isn't going to give up on you."
"I heard him talking to El last night on the phone, Alex," Neal retorted, "he said he was regretting taking me in, that he was thinking of giving me up."

Peter was on his way to the elevator on his lunch break when his boss, Reese Hughes, called the agent back into the older agent's office.
"Where are you going for lunch, Agent Burke?" Hughes asked.
"I was going to drop in on Neal Caffrey at his school before grabbing a bite to eat at Panera's(1) on my way back to the office, sir," Peter replied.
"How is Caffrey?" Hughes asked.
"Depends on who you ask, sir," the agent admitted.
Hughes cocked an eyebrow at Peter's words, silently encouraging the other agent to clarify his statement.
"Neal insisted that he was fine, but he looked unwell when I took him to school this morning," Peter dutifully clarified.
"I'd ask what Mrs. Burke thinks, but I know she's out of town right now," Hughes remarked.
"I did think about calling her," Peter admitted, "but I shouldn't have to depend on my wife to know how to handle Neal."
"I don't mean to sound sexist or chauvinistic, but isn't child-rearing traditionally considered to be the forte of women?" Hughes inquired.
"It is," Peter confirmed, "but I don't want to force my wife to give up her career simply because I can't handle the kid placed under my care."
"Perhaps she can teach you some of her tricks," Hughes remarked.
Peter's phone chimed, and the agent immediately answered it, knowing that his boss would not take offense.
"Agent Burke."
A pause, as the person on the other end identified themselves and their reason for calling the agent.
"Which hospital?"
The caller answered, then Peter hung up.
"Take the rest of the day off, Burke," Hughes ordered before Peter could even open his mouth.
"Thank you, sir," the agent said.
1. Panera's is an awesome place to eat. I'm sure they have them in NYC.
