Summary (this chapter): In which the impossible happens...

Chapter One: The Ghost in the Machine
Montgomery Scott couldn't tell where the nude woman had come from--it looked like she had materialized beside the Enterprise's warp engines just moments before the whole ship had suddenly shut down for two hours, leaving only the most vital systems--of which life support was the most prominent--untouched, but he was sure her appearance was connected to the Enterprise suddenly floating virtually lifeless in space.
"What have you done to the engines, lass?" he demanded, not too unkindly.
The woman only wordlessly blinked at the Chief Engineer, unable to communicate.
The Scotsman sighed, not sure what to do with his unexpected visitor.
"The Captain wants to know what's going on with the ship, Scott," Keenser remarked, not noticing the woman at first.
"Tell her I'm working on them, Keenser," Scotty replied, as the woman abruptly fainted, drawing Keenser's attention to her.
"Who's she?" the midget alien inquired.
"I haven't a clue," Scotty admitted. "But I am convinced that she has something to do with the engines failing."

Jamie frowned as she studied the still form in the biobed in the iso chamber.
"I don't get it," McCoy muttered behind her.
"Get what, Doctor?" Spock asked.
"It's like she's not there, Commander," the doctor clarified. "I've tried everything I could think of and then some, but no matter what I do, it's like she's not there."
"Fascinating," the half-Vulcan remarked.
"Could she be a hologram of some sort?" Jamie suddenly inquired.
Spock shook his head.
"Doubtful, Captain," he replied.
"Has she said anything about who she is and what she did to the ship?" Jamie asked.
"She doesn't even seem to be able to understand us, no matter what language we try with her," McCoy grimly replied.
Jamie had a wild idea, one that she was sure would be proven false, but she wanted to try it anyways, since she couldn't think of anything better.
"I would like to speak with her," Jamie informed her friends.

The woman looked up as the Captain entered the iso chamber.
Jamie sat down in the chair beside her biobed, a PADD in one hand and a stylus in the other.
"My name is Jamie T. Kirk, and I am the captain of the Enterprise," Jamie introduced herself.
"Enterprise," echo'd the woman, recognizing the name.
"Yes," agreed Jamie, wondering if this was progress. "She's my ship, the ship you are currently on."
The woman shook her head.
"Not yours," she insisted. "Scotty's."
Jamie wished she had Spock's eyebrows so that she could properly express her disbelief at the woman's words.
"You know my Chief Engineer?" Jamie asked instead.
The woman nodded vigorously.
"I wished to return his devotion," she added.
"His devotion?" Jamie echo'd, beginning to wonder what the odds were that her wild idea was right, because she was clearly defying those odds now. "I was not aware that my Chief Engineer was in a relationship with anyone except for the Enterprise."
"With me," the woman insisted. "I am his Lady."
