"To cut a long story short I lost my mind."

Happy Gene Hunt Day to each and every one of you beautiful people! I, unfortunately, won't be partaking in the squee and massive post-ep discussions until late Sunday night, and by then everyone will no doubt have said what needs to be said.

So...this is probably the last chance to indulge in some innocent conspiracy theories before the finale airs tonight and shatters (or not) our various preconceptions. Here I've got a little presentation on something I haven't mentioned in quite some time...THE THEORY!

Has anyone ever considered the relationship between Alex and Shaz?

Alex, as a the only female DI is someone Shaz looks up to both professionally and personally (cuz of that time she asked about teh secks, lol). And Shaz is someone Alex gives advice to, perhaps trying to steer her in the right direction as a woman in a man's world. In episode 7 she tells Shaz that women like her are "the future of the police force." (To which Shaz replies, "Fab!" LOL! *pats Shaz*) Therefore, putting two and two together, we get this strange mother/daughter-ish theme.

So, if Shaz represents Alex's "daughter" within the 1981 world, Episode 7 gave us an incredible hint re: The Theory because it was Shaz that The Clown "took" from Alex. And to take it even further, the staging of that entire scene was EXTREMELY similar to what occurred in episode 1. Observe!

Two hostage situations. A gun is pointed at Alex in each one while she's trying to talk the shooter down.

Molly decides to get out of the car to help her mum, which is sweet but very VERY stupid. Shaz also decides to be the hero. Here we have similar shots of them two peeking out at the intense situation that they REALLY SHOULDN'T INTERRUPT! Really.

But, of course, they interrupt. Stupid girls. :P

And this leads them to their deaths.

Molly is shot underneath the docks (where I'm betting Alex still is, hence all the dripping water references in '81) and Shaz is accidentally stabbed under that billboard.

As she's dying, Shaz calls out: "I want my mum!" This here is a huge clue, because after all, we're in Alex's mind. This is what she thinks a dying girl would say, or possibly, if Molly wasn't killed instantly, this might even be the last thing she heard Molly cry out.

And so in Alex's mind, Shaz is killed.

BUT...

Unlike in 2008's REALITY, where she stood frozen, unable to save her daughter...

Here, in 1981, Alex SAVES Shaz! She brings her back to life!!! She proclaims to the universe: "I DID IT!!!"

Mmhmm.

Wonderful final beat on the billboard. A big hand holding a little hand. Themes!

So what have we got? We've got yet another instance of Alex saving Shaz from being killed. Because if you remember in the first episode, it is actually Shaz who Layton holds hostage at the end, and there, Alex and the A Team arrest him. That's twice now that she's saved her "daughter" character in HER HEAD 1981.

Because...to reiterate...Molly was the one who got shot.

And this never happened. We're already in Alex's mind!

Oh Alex. Oh Sweetie. :/ *pats*

Now for a different spin on this same topic, I'd like to point you in the direction of ohvienna's post where she discusses the birthday cake scene, bringing forth some fascinating parallels.

I'd also like to mention that there are at least two songs from the show's soundtrack that are about insanity/mental illness: "To Cut a Long Story Short" by Spandau Ballet and "Mirror in the Bathroom" by the English Beat.

Finally, have some LOLs.

Keeley Hawes as Zoe Reynolds (from Spooks) holds the key to the mystery that is Alex Drake:
