Ok, as the flist is currently exploding from
this RTD quote I'm feeling the need to step back and point out several key things which I think people are definitely overlooking.

She's mah Martha. She's strong. She can take it. *squishes her*

Martha as played by Freema ruled in her own right. She wouldn't have been on the show as long, asked to do Torchwood, and then asked to come back otherwise. :)

I'm actually dreading the Rose comms doing exactly what you proposed they'd be doing. (It's probably already happening on the OG.) And I think that's partially why the reaction on the Martha comms is so strong in the opposite way. I mean writing letters of protest to RTD? No. They're just already anticipating the Rosefen attack. Martha really felt like secon best, but I felt it was only because emo Doctor, he just doesn't want to get close to anyone again. And after Doomsday I wouldn't want either.
Actually I think The Doctor felt guilty when Martha left, and he was really sorry for the way he treated her, and that's why he decided not to tell her to stay.
I remember people complaining about that, but if he would have said, oh I'm sorry please stay, it would have been very selfish from him. Like he didn't even get why Martha was leaving, almost like the last conversation he had with Joan (I wanted to kill him). So that's why he just nods and says thank you.

You're right, but it's also very important to remember that Martha didn't know anything about the events of Doomsday or anything pertaining to Rose. She just got little bits and pieces thrown her way once in a while which made her feel like shit. But we the audience, of course, know exactly why the Doctor is behaving the way he does.

But I'm not sure if he was really sorry for everything he did to her. I think he can't yet admit that out loud, because if he did, then he ( ... )
