My parents were European. My dad is from the Netherlands and my mom was born in Canada, but her parents were from Germany and the Ukraine... bunch of Slavic stuff in there, too, apparently.
Yeah, when I think about stuff like that myself, it makes me feel terrible...
Ty. I know your'e right! And I don't usually buy into white guilt since it just seems to create more of a divide. Sometimes you have something in your face like that and you're just like... -_-
Are people still being assholes to each other in terms of that.
There are a few other things that people separate themselves on purpose and think that it's going to make it better or something. It's quite backwards, actually.
There's not much evidence in Canada about any segregation too much, except for when they talk about the Residential Schools and Boys and Girls doors.
Yeah. There's a lot of racial tension in the South. I have black friends that I can speak to about this stuff freely, and discuss the racism here...but a lot of white people, no matter how nice they are to black peoples' faces, call them "niggers" behind their backs, and a lot of black people, no matter how nice they are to a white person's face, call them "cracker" or "white bitch" behind their back.
Moe and I took a lunch break together the other day and went up to Zaxby's (a fast-food chain that sells chicken), and two black girls gave us a dirty look for being together. Like "look at this white bitch and her black boyfriend." We laughed about it since there's nothing we can do and getting pissed off wouldn't serve a purpose.
The race issue was a big deal when Ronnie and I were going to be together. WE didn't care, our families wouldn't have cared (or at least, my immediate family wouldn't, I'm sure my grandfather would have shit brix), but we knew we'd get a lot of nasty looks and/or comments being an interracial couple.
