Bathroom improvement

It is about to rain outside and I'm actually home for an entire day contemplating spackling the areas of the drywall in the bathroom that were damaged from my wallpaper removing spree that ocurred last night. Yes, that early nineties-inspired, vine-like design wallpaper is no more, in fact, already taken away by the lovely garbage people who work ( Read more... )

You can paint before you install. However, unless you are using drywall anchors, you need to find a stud to actually put that badboy up. You might also want to find out if there are pipes around there. You don't want to screw into a water pipe. That's just bad juju right there.

Good luck!

That's a surface mount one, so it's no different (or more difficult) than putting up shelves: measure, line it up level, drill holes, screw in. Although, you'll need to use toggle bolts due to the concentration of weight per corner; unless you mount right into a stud (which you can find easily enough with a stud finder) for at least one of the corners.

I would paint first, that way you don't have to tape it off and paint around it.

How fun!

Okay, you know about this stuff...

Does a stud finder detect everything in the walls, or merely studs? Meaning, if I put my stud finder on the drywall and it beeps, does that mean it's a stud in there or a metal pipe?

Depends what kind of stud finder you have. If you have one of the older magnetic ones then yes it will find pipes, unrelated nails, etc. If you have the more modern electronic scanning ones then it will just find studs (unless yours is equipped with, and you turn on, metal scanning, but it's a deliberate process).

And if you *are* using a magnetic one, then I suggest you put getting a new electronic one on your home improvement list. :)

*nods in agreement*

Stud finders are, by definition, nifty things to have in the toolbox. There's also a new laser device that enables you to hang things on your wall perfectly level (I saw it on some HGTV show and immediately began coveting it). Because, you know, you can never have too many tools... sorta like shoes. :D
