There have been a few meta posts discussing the validity of the terms “pre-slash” or “pre-ship” as they relate to accurately represents fic. Some people think of the term as a kind of cop-out. I've seen this argued a lot, usually against, though I understand the need for something to fill that space. People who read gen and gen only usually don't want surprises, and people who look for their specific pairing want the romance and sometimes porn. But I agree that even budding romance, first thoughts past friendship are slash; it's not like there's a similar label for het fic. Usually the rating, notes, and summary are enough. I suppose there's the overlap of gen readers who will read pre-slash and slash readers who will also, and the label works for them?
