PART FIFTEEN

Owen snorted at Ianto's comment, "What do you mean 'I don't want to discuss it?' You were with us for a year and then you buggered off." Ianto ignored Owen's comment and continued to look at Jack for answers.

Jack gave him a nod but didn't speak, he turned back to Gwen, "Please finish the story, I want to know what happened here- how things changed." The three looked between each other and Gwen finished the tale.

"We kept our misinformation and covert operations going- keeping them off Martha's trail, but they finally tracked her down and took her to the Valiant. She was to be executed as the countdown to launch took place, which was the same time as the entire world was supposed to focus on the Doctor. Tosh," Gwen stopped and Toshiko picked up the narrative.

"I'd broken through and had a ghost running on one of the Archangel satellites; we had viewing access to all of its operating procedures and systems but I couldn't make any changes for fear of the self defense systems that might track back down to us." She paused, "When the video cast started, I noticed a new set of control commands upload to the network. They were very specific and disabled all of the subliminal controls- it was like someone was freeing the world from Archangel's mind control and at first we thought it was someone hacking the system. Then." Toshiko covered her mouth with her and and shook her head.

Owen started, "Then it all went pear shaped. The masses started chanting for the Doctor and nothing happened. The Master just laughed like a loon as his rockets blasted into space then pointed his little laser thing at Martha Jones and told the Doctor to 'Say goodbye to your little hero.'" Owen stopped for a moment to catch his breath, the girls were both crying. "He shot Martha and made the world watch along with her family and you; and he never took his eyes off the Doctor when he was doing it."

Tosh spoke quietly, "He had his guards kill the rest of her family and then shot you just because he could. We all just sat there stunned because we were so sure that everything would work out. A few hours later, when the Valiant was coming over Cardiff; Ianto deactivated the lock down and ran into the main hub area and typed something into the computer I'd never seen- Cathubodva- and grabbed something then headed for the lift." She looked at Ianto, "He walked out onto the Plass and before we could do anything he typed something on that PDA and locked us in- deadlock seals and no password that we could find." Tosh took a deep breath, "Toclafane swarmed the sky above the Plass, the Valiant came down lower and Ianto yelled something none of us could understand and suddenly there were five beams intersecting above the water tower and then the Valiant was destroyed with every Toclafane in sight."

Jack spoke, "But."

Gwen answered, "But the Master wasn't aboard. He was on his new ship and they arrived a few seconds later. He started firing on the Plass, the centre, everything. Ianto just stood there and then there was nothing but dust." She paused, "That was thirteen months ago."

Jack was confused, "But you said the Doctor was dead and that you thought I was dead as well?" No one would make eye contact and then it dawned on him, "We were on the Valiant."

Ianto had remained quiet through the story, listening to things that in his world never happened; but Cathubodva, the Lady of Ravens, he had planned to use it as the activation code for the rebuilt point singularity weapon Torchwood used on the Sycorax. In this world not only did he get the rebuild complete, but he actually used it. "Oh god." He began to hyperventilate, it was like a sudden rush of water through his heart and lungs. "Jack."

Jack quickly ran over to Ianto and held him tight as the Welshman finally lost the iron clad control on his emotions; Jack whispered, "Shh. Hey, it's okay. It's not me remember, and this never happened."

Jack didn't react to the sound of three guns cocking behind him, or one being pressed into the base of his skull. He didn't respond when Owen growled, "What do you mean it never fucking happened!"
