"Egad!" came the exclamation, followed by an inaudible explosion. Suddenly, where there had been the young man, there was a teapot. And it was talking.

"I say sir, it's awfully loutish of you to sneak up on me like that. The name's Simkin, by the way. Are you sure we haven't met?"

Adam laughed. "I wasn't sneakin', I was walkin' by. And I'm sure I'd remember someone who turned into a teapot. My name's Adam. It's nice to meet you, Simkin. I'm sorry if I startled you."

The teapot vanished, and Simkin reappeared, as a human. He looked Adam up and down, and nodded to himself. "Well, at least you have manners, dear boy. And sometimes, manners can do miraculous things, as the dear Count de Morbhan said after training his gorilla to use cutlery. Or was it his wife that he trained?"

Simkin paused for a second, as if in thought. "Anyway, it's not that important. What brings you into these hallways?"
