Closed RP: Emma and Adams

Sep 22, 2006 21:37

Emma stopped at the door to what she believed to be Mr. John Adams' quarters. She almost put on her usual congenial smile, but quickly sobered. This was a somber time, and such an expression was inappropriate. Even if not dead, Susan had run off in a most perplexing manner, which could only mean one thing... she was either fleeing from or to ruin! ( Read more... )

John looked up from his journal when he heard the knock. Only knowing two people at the school, he assumed it must be either Susan or Dib, but it would be appropriate to meet neither in his shirtsleeves. So, throwing on his coat, he crossed to the door and opened it with a smile, which wavered slightly but didn't fall when he found an attractive and well-dressed young woman on the other side. He bowed politely.

"Good evening, madam. May I be of some assistance?"

Emma shook her head. "No, but if you be Mr. Adams, I hope to be of service to you. I do believe that my roommate, one Susan Sto Helit, has made an unexpected exit. We can hope that she shall return, but the message left for me seems to point elsewhere. She left this to be delivered to your door. Perhaps it will illuminate the circumstances, somewhat?"

"I am he, madam. Won't you please come in?"

John looked anxiously around the room for an unoccupied chair for his guest and presented it to her.

"I haven't heard from Su... from Miss Sto Helit in some days. I confess I was growing worried. You say she's left and has sent you with a package for me? Pray, tell all. And to whom do I owe my gratitude?"

Emma made a small motion of a curtsy and let herself inside. She did not make a habit to visit the popcorn room (she felt popification was a private matter and it would bring its victims poor justice to make them subjects of gawking), so she could not give Adams any illumination in that regard.

"Thank you. I have heard a bit about you from Susan, though not as much as one might fear." She sat down on the offered chair, package carefully balanced on her lap.

"I am called Miss Emma Woodhouse, of Highbury. She has left a most peculiar note, indicating that she was involved in some experiment, and that she must now be detained or absent or perhaps... well, she suggested the possibility, but as death is impossible on campus I think she is safe from that, thank goodness. But I am sad to say that I don't know much more than you do, sir. I was her roommate, but we kept many matters private."
