Emma stopped at the door to what she believed to be Mr. John Adams' quarters. She almost put on her usual congenial smile, but quickly sobered. This was a somber time, and such an expression was inappropriate. Even if not dead, Susan had run off in a most perplexing manner, which could only mean one thing... she was either fleeing from or to ruin!

John looked anxiously around the room for an unoccupied chair for his guest and presented it to her.
"I haven't heard from Su... from Miss Sto Helit in some days. I confess I was growing worried. You say she's left and has sent you with a package for me? Pray, tell all. And to whom do I owe my gratitude?"

"Thank you. I have heard a bit about you from Susan, though not as much as one might fear." She sat down on the offered chair, package carefully balanced on her lap.
"I am called Miss Emma Woodhouse, of Highbury. She has left a most peculiar note, indicating that she was involved in some experiment, and that she must now be detained or absent or perhaps... well, she suggested the possibility, but as death is impossible on campus I think she is safe from that, thank goodness. But I am sad to say that I don't know much more than you do, sir. I was her roommate, but we kept many matters private."
