((open to anyone wandering by the classroom))

Anya hurried up the stairs and past the Great Hall. She was supposed to meet Emily in classroom seven so they could get it ready for the first meeting of the Dead Girls Club, but she had lost track of time. Books and wand in hand, she walked quickly into the classroom.

Emily had been waiting with a pile of books of her own, spread across two benches and a chair, and she was practicing her wand movements when Anya came into the room. "Swish and flick," she muttered to herself. "Swish and... Oh, there you are." She smiled at Anya.

"Hello! Sorry I'm a little late." Anya walked over and dropped her books onto a convenient desk. Some of the books had parchment bookmarks sticking out between the pages. She pulled over a chair and sat down, taking out her own wand. "Have you tried casting any spells yet?"

"That is quite all right." Emily tapped her wand on the open book in front of her. "Yes, I have been trying something simple, just to see if I could do it. I think I have got one down." She pointed her wand at a rather small book entitled One Hundred And Ten Tricks of Magical Decorating, and tried the traditional "swish-and-flick" move. "Wingardium Leviosa!" she murmured. To her immense delight and relief, the book did float up into the air, where it remained.

Anya gave Emily a round of applause. "Great! At least we know it works for both of us. This isn't the first time I've done magic, but I'd never used a wand before." Anya started paging through Household Spells for the Busy Witch. "I thought we could start by trying to clean the room. I saw a charm in here that should do the trick." She opened the book to the first marker but didn't find the spell she wanted, so she moved to the next. "It looks like we'll have quite a few girls tomorrow!"

Anya sat down in one of the new chairs to read through the guardian spell. She looked up at Emily's exclamation and admired the curtain. "That looks really good! We're going to be experienced magical decorators by the time we're done." Getting up again, she walked toward the door. "I think this will work, but if I don't come back in a few minutes, open the door and try a Finite Incantatem to end the spell."

Anya stepped out into the hall, checked to make sure no one was nearby, then closed the door and turned to the statue of a woman in a cloak. She pointed her wand at the statue and said "Custodio", then pointed at the door and said "Portus", then added the password "Hopscotch". Nothing appeared to happen, but when she tried to open the door, her hand slid away from the handle. With a laugh, she quickly turned back to the statue, and repeated the password. This time she was able to grasp the handle and open the door. "Hey! It worked!"

Modern art or no modern art, Emily would not stand for having that stained curtain in this room, so she quickly re-did the spell and evened out the dye. There! Two matching curtains! Spectacular. She looked up with a bright smile when Anya came back in. "Wonderful! I was a tad worried about that particular trick, to tell you the truth."

She returned to the decorating books. "I wonder if I can make a coffee table out of that bench. It does not look very complicated." She tapped her wand on the bench and muttered a few words. The bench shimmered, rose a few inches from the floor, spun around so that Emily had to jump backwards, and then landed with a thud. A change could however be spotted in that it now had a quite lovely pattern of intricate windling plants and the occasional carved butterfly running up and down its legs. The rest of it did remain a very dull school bench. Emily shook her head. "Always these butterflies... But at least it is a start."

Flush with the success of the password spell, Anya transfigured another chair. It changed, but ended up a little lopsided. She tried again, focusing on straightening it out, then joined Emily next to the bench-table. "I like the butterflies! The vines are also very pretty. I think the key with Transfiguration must be concentration. You really have to keep your mind focused on what you want to happen." She gave Emily a smile. "Which is probably why I keep ending up with funny-looking chairs."

Emily took a deep breath. A little unnecessary perhaps, but sometimes she enjoyed doing things like living people did, and it helped clearing her mind when facing new daunting tasks. "All right, then." She closed her eyes, visualising what she wanted, and tapped her wand again.

This time it went more smoothly. The wood that the bench was made of changed from birch to cherry, became smoother and shinier. The bench flattened out to a more coffee table shape, the legs slendered while still keeping its new pattern. If one wanted to be very picky one could point out that one leg was a good quarter of an inch shorter than the others and that the piece looked a little clumsily made, but it was still, without a shadow of a doubt, a working coffee table.

Emily opened her eyes again, and a wide smile spread across her face. "It worked!" She noticed the faults and wrinkled her nose. "Oh well, nothing is perfect..."

She turned her attention to the chairs and asked: "Do you want any help with those?"
