Interacting with a talking dog was good practise for eventually dealing with a talking hat, he supposed. Except nothing can really prepare anyone for the eccentricity of the Hat.
He seemed to consider something for a long moment, then lowered himself into a crouch, to be closer to the dog's level.
"You've been helpful," he said mildly. "What would you want as a 'bribe'?"

It was safe to assume he'd hardly imagined being asked for such a "bribe", but -- considering who was asking -- it didn't seem too unusual. What was strange was that a dog was willing to trust him.
He hesitantly reached to pet the dog's stomach, keeping the pressure of his hand light enough to hopefully not hurt. Needless to say, this was literally the first time he'd ever pet an animal.
